"Now we bring in accused no. 1, Sirius Black and accused no.2,
Peter Pettigrew."
Harry was sitting on the guest section, nervously playing with the loose end of his tie. The aurors bought Sirius in first and sat him on a chair in front of the minister and chained him. They bought Pettigrew in and followed the Sam procedure.
"Mr. Black do you agree to answer questions under the effects of Veritaserum?"
"Yes"
The aurors put 2 drops into Sirius's mouth.
"What is your name?"
"Sirius Orion Black"
"Were you the Potter's secret keeper the night they died?"
"No"
A number of loud gasps followed his answer.
"HE IS A LIAR!" Pettigrew shouted angrily.
"Silence Pettigrew, none can lie under the effects of Veritaserum." Said Fudge.
"Who was the secret keeper then?"
"Peter Pettigrew. We trusted that filthy rat and he BETRAYED US!!" Sirius shouted the last part.
Murmurs and whispers of opinions and judgments followed this answer.
"Okay. Now Mr. Pettigrew do you agree to answer questions under effects of Veritaserum?"
Silence.
"Pettigrew."
"Y - yes" He squeaked like the rat he was.
2 drops were put in his mouth.
"Were you the Potter's secret keeper the night they died?"
"Yes"
"Did you betray them?"
"Yes"
Outraged shouts were heard. "CAPTURE THIS RAT!!" "HOW DARE HE!!" "SENTENCE HIM TO A LIFETIME IN AZKABAN" "SENTENCE HIM TO DEATH!!"
"ORDER! ORDER! I request everyone to calm themselves down. Please."
Everyone settled down at once. By this time the effects of the truth potion had wore off of both the accused. Sirius had a big smile on his face. He was winning. He stole a look at Harry. He too was smiling earnestly. Whereas Pettigrew looked as white as a sheet of paper.
"Ok now...Pettigrew has been found guilty. Charges include:- Ten years in Azkaban and Dementor's kiss on this same day 11 years later." Fudge announced. Pettigrew was taken away by the aurors immediately without further ado.
"As for Sirius Black. Mr. Black is cleared of all charges. You'll be given 10,000,000 galleons from the ministry as compensation for 12 years of unfair imprisonment as well as being the Black heir, all the Black property has been written on your name. I hope you can forgive us for this horrible misunderstanding and judgment."
Claps were echoing throughout the courtroom. Sirius couldn't believe it. He was a free man at last! The chains came off of him and he stood up. Now for the hard part. He thought. I need to get Harry's custody.
"Minister Fudge. Thank you for giving me a fair trial and clearing all my charges. I will forgive the ministry and the Wizengamot for my unfair treatment if you fulfill this demand of mine."
