One night in an old cemetery in a small house, Lindo suddenly wake up in the middle of the night remembered something. He saw his wife asleep beside him in their wooden bed laid down in the ground. He looked upon to their children sleeping in a wagon. Lindo slowly stood and walked out of their home. He looked around, he know all their neighbors that time are sleeping in their houses. He took a wooden paddle shape, quickly made his way out and tried to climb into some grave, searching for his purpose.
Matilde was surprised at the door, it suddenly closed. She stood up thinking someone else in their house. She realize that his husband is gone beside her, where so it be? Ah! He might urinate outside, she thought. They don’t have comfort room that’s why they just urinate anywhere in the night. She checked their children and she walked out to follow her husband. But she couldn’t find her husband.
Lindo quickly did his purpose. He dug a grave of a child and took something white in its lap. He attended the child’s funeral to get information on the buried. Immediately he covered it again, then he leave like nothing happened.
He saw a volume of the body under the layer of grave, consulting around he think she is a woman. He would just hide but he recognize that his wife. "Matilde, what are you doing here?" Lindo's question which is not high but strongly voice. She turned around and she saw her husband holding a big candle."I follow you assuming you only nearby, but I can’t see you. Where do you get that candle? Matilde knew that they used lamp instead of candle for their daily use. They cannot afford to buy something like a candle. "There just, I got it from a nearby tomb, yet large and looks unused so I took to avail", Lindo lied confused with hypocrisy. "Come, we must return the kids might get up if they saw we’re gone” Lindo said instantly feel like escape critical of Matilde." Lindo I don’t understand, previously you did not collecting items that should be in dead, we’d don’t need that candle "doubt asked of Matilde to his husband. Lindo turned around to answer his wife "we can use it when we do not have gas for lamp”. Matilde don’t want to argue anymore so she just followed Lindo way to their home. She check again their two sons after they got home, she put a broken patchwork blanket to them. Then the couple lay down on their wooden bed to sleep.
Lindo unable to sleep, thinking the purpose of the candle. That candle will serve his way to overcome the difficulty of his family. They previously lived in the province they have cared fields, vegetable plants and coconut farm. They live well there. Eaten properly, they can buy their daily use and able to study his two sons. But unexpected lot owner will sell the whole property and they must look for another place to live. They decided to leave the village and go to city expecting Lindo might get a high salary job. They rent an apartment and Lindo look for a job. But he never had a job, months passed quickly and soon they can’t pay the rent. Until the owner told them to get out and give them one week to leave.
Lindo aware of where they might move, they decided to settle in Payatas site so they don’t need to pay a rent. But Matilde disagree the idea to settle in the mountain of garbage, she didn’t want her two sons to get sick. Lindo confused where they move, a few days before the deadline on them. He ask some acquaintances who may be know some place to transfer, many have said under the bridge, slum area in Tondo and much more. He come home stress due to resentment, they just one day rest period for them to leave. Someone told to Lindo that some people living in the old cemetery nearby to their place, it is neat place and concrete but illegal. But government of the area didn’t pay attention. Lindo can’t decide where they go, he did not want his family to sleep and live in street. Matilde agree to live in cemetery because she unknown someone to approach, their relatives are living in remote provinces.
One night Lindo again went to carry out his plan. Carrying out the candle he finds a place he can use to plan. At home Matilde awoke because he was thirsty, her husband was gone again. She visibly her husband always leave in midnight, she would not think there is another woman his husband with, but she was concerned then she again went out to find her husband. She forgot to drink and to look the two children, immediately she went out of their house. She used to be around the coffin, smell of dead, candles and more at the cemetery. She trembles sometimes but she endured because of poverty. She was in her way, she saw a bulk of person in the distance, backs and form as the recently urinate. She would hide but would eventually the person notice her "Matilde? Where are you going? Julio asked to Matilde, Julio is their close friend in that area.
