Ash and Serena begins as the Chorus introduces two feuding families of Pallet : the Ketchums and the Yvonnes. On a hot summer's day, the young men of each faction fight until the Prince of Pallet intercedes and threatens to banish them. Soon after, the head of the Yvonne family plans a feast. His goal is to introduce his daughter Serena to a Count named Calem who seeks to marry Serena.
Ketchum's son Ash and his friends Paul and Gary hear of the party and resolve to go in disguise. Ash hopes to see his beloved Misty at the party. Instead, while there, he meets Serena and falls instantly in love with her. Yvonne's cousin Alain recognises the Ketchum boys and forces them to leave just as Ash and Serena discover one another.
Ash lingers near the Yvonne house to talk with Serena when she appears in her window. The pair declare their love for one another and intend to marry the next day. With the help of Yvonne's Nurse, the lovers arrange to marry when Serena goes for confession at the cell of Friar Oak. There, they are secretly married (talk about a short engagement).
Following the secret marriage, Yvonne's cousin Alain sends a challenge to Ash. Ash refuses to fight, which angers his friend Gary who then fights with Alain. Gary is accidentally killed as Ash intervenes to stop the fight. In anger, Ash pursues Alain, kills him, and is banished by the Prince.
Serena is anxious when Ash is late to meet her and learns of the brawl, Alain's death, and Ash's banishment. Friar Oak arranges for Ash to spend the night with Serena before he leaves for Veradian. Meanwhile, the Yvonne family grieves for Alain, so Lord Yvonne moves Serena's marriage to Calem to the next day. Serena's parents are angry when Serena doesn't want to marry Calem, but they don't know about her secret marriage to Ash.
Friar Oak helps Serena by providing a sleeping draught that will make her seem dead. When the wedding party arrives to greet Serena the next day, they believe she is dead. The Friar sends a messenger to warn Ash of Serena's plan and bids him to come to the Yvonne family monument to rescue his sleeping wife.
The vital message to Ash doesn't arrive in time because the plague is in town (so the messenger cannot leave Pallet). Hearing from his servant that Serena is dead, Ash buys poison from an Apothecary in Veradian. He returns to Pallet and goes to the tomb where he surprises and kills the mourning Calem. Ash takes his poison and dies, while Serena awakens from her drugged coma. She learns what has happened from Friar Oak, but she refuses to leave the tomb and stabs herself. The Friar returns with the Prince, the Yvonne, and Ash's lately widowed father. The deaths of their children lead the families to make peace, and they promise to erect a monument in Ash and Serena's memory.
