The loud, persistent beeping of my alarm rouses me from my first night of peaceful sleep since the accident. Brad rolls over next to me with a grumble of discontent, but his snoring soon picks up again; it has every morning for the past seven years. {Seven years! Has it really been that long?} I sit up from my cluster of cushions and stretch the kinks out of my back, preparing myself for the day ahead. 《But nothing could prepare me for what was to happen.》 I pull my housecoat on over my nightgown and head down the steep staircase to the kitchen and my life sustenance. Coffee! The kettle is already full, so, I simply flick it on and go to collect the milk from the doorstep. The tall mahogany door is stuck closed, but with a harsh yank I manage to get it open. 《Then I wish I hadn't.》I bend down to pick up the cold glass bottle and I see the small bundle next to it; I stop mid-lift and nudge it with my hand to see what it is. Revulson pours through my body at the same time as understanding kicks in. {MY BABY!!!!!} A scream of horror rises from my throat and echoes off the buildings of my neighbourhood. {Who would do this?}

Brad suddenly grips my shoulders and pulls me back into the house, slamming the door with his foot as he drag my unresponsive body to the living room. The house phone's in his hands the second he releases my shoulders, he frantically dials 999 with unshed tears in his eyes making them shine like emeralds. His lips move but I must be deaf because I hear nothing, just the thundering of my heart while I sit trembling on the cushioned couch.

My hearing must have returned at some point because the next thing I know, I hear a knock at the door; a loud simple rhythm. Knock. Knockknock. Knock. Brad looks up from his slippers and sighs; standing up with a groan he walks out of the room and the sound of the heavy, creaking door opening reaches my ears a moment later, along with male voices that I don't recognise, they talk for a few minutes and I'm becoming anxious as to what they could be saying? I listen to their footsteps and hold my breath, not knowing what to expect? Brad walks in ahead of the two officers, his eyes wide and lips slightly parted in an exression I recognise as complete and utter confusion. {What's he confused about?}

"Mrs Michael I'm Officer Stewart, it is my understanding that you were the one to discover the deceased foetus. Is that correct?" Said the older of the officers, his neat moustache twitching on his upper lip and his round rear settling into the recliner. {Straight to business then.}

"Yes, wh- what will happen to her?" I stutter, my hands begin to tremble again and brad gently peels my fingers off of the milk bottle and places in on the floor, keeping grip on my hands with his free one; offering support, even without words.

"Mrs Michael, your husband tells us that when he came downstairs you were at the front door, is that right?" Asks the other officer who had perched on the edge of the loveseat across from me.

"Uh, yes, yes I believe so. But what will happen to- to the body?" I have to ask, I might not want to know the answer, but I have to ask, and the fact that they both ignored my question makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight like a soldier and my curiosity peaks.

"Mrs michael could you please tell us exactly what happened this morning and what you saw when you opened the door?" Asked the first officer. {Stewart was it? Something like that. Why isn't he answering me?}

"I opened the door, picked up the milk and saw my dead daughter, now what is going to happen to her?" My voice raises uncontrollably as I speak; my heart pounding in my ribs in a painful drum beat.

Officer Stewart and the young one glance at one another and then both sets of eyes rest on Brad. My eyes follow theirs immediately and I see my partner turning away.ish It seems like Officer Stewart has decided to eventually answer me when he opens his mouth, but the young one cuts him off before he can spit it out.

"Look, Mrs Michael, are you sure that there was in fact a baby on your doorstep?" He asks me in a voice leaking with superiority.
{You're really starting to annoy me kid and-} "What do you mean am I sure? How can you even ask that? Of course I'm sure!" I reply and stand, getting more frustrated by the second. "Didn't you see her out there?"

"Please, Mrs Michael calm down, im sure there's some sort of explanation, but you have to understand, there is no evidence of a corpse ever being outside your door." Officer Stewart's voice raises above mine just enough to make me listen, but hearing the words does no good; I don't believe them. {There's no way he's telling the truth! I saw her with my own two eyes.}

"Love, listen to me." Brad is in front of me and his large fingers dig into my arms forcing me to do as he says. "They are telling the truth! In know it's hard to believe, but I looked outside and they are right; there is absolutely nothing outside except for the newspaper on the lawn."
《I knew he wouldn't lie to me but I need proof.》My legs drag as I rush to the door, I fumble for the handle, heave the door to open it and then clutch at it as it swings open to reveal an empty porch.

《The police took our reports, but I don't really remember much of that, just the shock that reverberated through my body in pulses.》{At last.} Officer Stewart is finally satisfied with our explanations of the morning's events and begins to lift his plump body from the deep leather cushions of the recliner.

"Well, I think that will be all for now. If something happens then simply call 999 again or if it's just a question you can contact me on my private line." He says holding a small card out to me.

Delicately gripping the card between my index finger and thumb, I haul my body up from the soft sofa and move towards the door.

"Thank you officer, we will." I say and see Brad nodding as he steadily steps ahead of me to lead the way out of the house. A hand gently taps my shoulder as I move to follow after Brad and Officer Stewart, causing me to stop and remember the other officer. {Huh, I never caught his name.} He looks at me through lowered lashes and I immediately forgive him for everything that happened earlier.

"Look, I'm sorry I snapped at you before, but my emotions were running high and I took that out on you, I know you were only doing your job, im sorry." I apologise, but before I can say any more he cuts in.

"Dont worry about it, I completely understand; I should have recognised that you were upset and been more compassionate, I really am sorry for how I treated you." He says and I can hear the sincerity in his voice.

"How about we pretend it never happened? Forgive and forget, yeah?" I suggest with a timid smile pulling at my lips.

"Right." A grin spreads across his face as he offers me his hand, I shake his warm hand and laugh lightly... 《Untill I remember why he's here.》 My face falls and I lead him after the others to say goodbye.

《My day passed like any normal day after that, I finished getting ready and went to work; the kids had missed me in assembly but soon forgot I hadn't been there. That evening I sat for hours talking to Brad about that morning, eventually we both got too tired and went up to sleep.》
