The thunderous crackle of footsteps against dried leaves did not fade, but instead rang through the woods as the infamous witch-duo of Salem ran through the woods, the more violent lot of the townsfolk hot on their heels.

The shorter of the two skidded to a halt, throwing their hands up in the air and a thick wall of bramble snaked up through the air from the ground, blocking him and the other from view.

"They're going to break through and catch up," they panted, grabbing the other's hand. "We've got to keep going."

"Purge," the other whispered through laboured breathing, then hunched over as he coughed violently.* "I can't- I won't—won't be able to catch up for long, honey—" he coughed again, wheezing "— just go without me—I'll find a way, a-alright?"

Purge made a face as though that was the stupidest thing he'd ever heard.

"I'm not leaving you alone," he said angrily over the din of the yells and murmurs of the people in pursuit of them, all angry, and their anxiety clouded his senses and made it seem like they were angry wasps buzzing behind the thorn bush wall.

"I'm not leaving you alone," they said again. "You know I can't, Jalex, I-"

"I can't—if I go, I don't want to bring you with me," Jalex said, his voice bitter, hurt and shaking. It pained him to have to come to this. "I-I can't, I don't want you dead because of me—"

"I'm not leaving you!" Purge squeezed his hand, a tear seeping from his eye and running down their cheek, and their breath shuddered.

Jalex sighed, looking at his feet, then straightened, squeezing back. "Fine," he said softly, "I'll run with you."

Purge stared at their husband, surprised that they'd manage to win this argument so easily. It didn't seem like him, but he supposed that it was potentially a situation between life and death. They didn't have time to argue.

They chuckled breathlessly despite the situation, pulling Jalex with him as their pursuers started to kick through the bramble. "Thank you," he smiled, running ahead with Jalex in tow.

"Yeah," Jalex replied quietly.

They ran for their lives as if the devil was behind them—funny, really, because the townsfolk thought they worked for the devil—and surprisingly, they didn't stumble; both were surprised that Jalex's lungs hadn't given out yet, and that Purge hadn't had a heart attack yet, but they were glad for it.

The townsfolk were getting closer. And closer, and closer, and then well within the range where they could soon reach them from a mere distance of perhaps 10 yards.

Then Purge felt himself land hard on the damp forest ground and winced, stunned, and it took them a couple of seconds to register the quiet, breathy "I love you" whispered into his ear and Jalex leaving his side.

The heavy stone of dread settled at the pit of his stomach and they scrambled up to see Jalex standing meters away from the furious townsfolk, the looks of grim triumph on their faces making him grit his teeth. With a great sweep of his arm, a ring of fire burned in the leaves, the flames shooting up to form a circular wall of hot flame. The townsfolk started yelling again, and it was then Purge was shook out of his daze.

"Jalex!" they screamed, voice dripping with desperation. "Don't—"

"Just run!" His voice was slightly drowned by the roar of the crackling flames, which flickered as Jalex coughed, gulping and groaning hoarsely. "I'll find you!"

Both of them knew it wasn't a promise that he was guaranteed to keep.

"No!" The tears came again and he sniffled, shouting over the noise. "I'm waiting right here until you come out of there, Fernum!"

There was silence over the flames, then he could make out a quiet chuckle from inside the wall. "You're adorable."

"Shut the fuck up and get out of there!"

"I can't!" His voice was weak, and so was he; holes were starting to form in the wall. His eyes widened, and he forced his arms further out into the air. "We'll both die if I let this down!"

The flames rose higher.

"Just run, please...!"

Purge's tears were evaporating right off his cheeks, but the intense heat did nothing to scorch his desperation, and in that moment, he really had half a mind to walk through the wall and pull his husband out of there.

"I need you to run," Jalex's voice pleaded as more holes melted through his flames. Purge could see him open his mouth to say something, but they never found out what it was.

He was abruptly cut off by a loud BANG that echoed through the woods. His head was thrown back, and the ring of fire vanished as suddenly as it had formed, letting Purge see his husband fall to the ground with a thud.

He wasn't getting up.

Everyone watched with bated breath.

He wasn't getting up.

Purge's bottom lip trembled as he scrambled over to Jalex, shakily pulling him onto his lap, the tears flowing freely and rolling down his cheeks, dripping from his jawline. Through his blurry vision he could make out Jalex's eyes—he realised with a sickening jolt that they were open—and a bullet of lead buried right in the middle of Jalex's forehead, their lips mumbling "nononononono" as they ran his fingers across the bullet wound, staining their fingers with dark red. A fresh sob escaping from his throat as he gripped Jalex's hand, which was already starting to lose its warmth.

Then it happened.

A painful bullet to their gut was fired and they let out a cry, doubling over and laying over his lover's corpse, breathing hard as more tears clouded his eyes. He couldn't struggle anymore. He wouldn't even try. He didn't have a reason to try anymore.

They'd lost it a minute ago.

brrrrr everyone dies
