I glanced up at the clock in Mr. Belfrey's room. 2:57, last period of the day. Everyone was itching to go home, even though we'd only been in school for 1 day.

I was doodling in my notebook, not paying attention to what my science teacher was saying. That was a mistake.

"Miss Turner," Mr. Belfrey started. "Huh?" I answered intelligently (NOT).

"I asked you what you learned today, Abigail." Mr. Belfrey replies calmly.

"Uh, I learned that, um, can you give me a second on that?" I managed to get out. "I need to decide what to say." Mr. Belfrey sighed, but he nodded his head.

I racked my brain as quickly as I could, trying to think of a good answer. After several painful seconds of deliberating, I came up with a response to be proud of.

"Alright, Mr. Belfrey, I've picked out the best thing I've learned!" I said, faking excitement. "I learned that you're going to be an awful teacher. Do you want to know how I know that? Of course you do. I know that because today is the first day of school and you are actually teaching us things." I explained.

"Every other teacher I have did fun things with us. Not work. I bet you're also going to give us homework, aren't you, Mr. Belfrey?"I inquired.

Every student was watching as Mr. Belfrey's face slowly turned redder and redder, eventually turning a deep shade of purple. After 2 long minutes of silence and tension, Mr. Belfrey spoke.

"Do you want to know what I learned today, Miss Turner? "Um, sure." I replied, worried about what Mr. Belfrey was about to say.

"I learned that you will be staying in my room after school for detention." There was a collective gasp across the room, because teachers NEVER gave out detention on the first day of school. But Mr. Belfrey wasn't finished.

"And since all of you seem more interested in my- erm- discussion with Miss Turner than today's class, I am assigning a 1000 word essay about how you should behave in the future.

"Mr. Belfrey," a girl's voice started. "When is the essay due? "Thank you for asking. The essay is due tomorrow." Mr. Belfrey replied coolly.

The bell rung and my classmates scrambled for their belongings and scurried out of the room. I, of course, stayed put.

"Miss Turner, it is only the first day of school and you've all ready caused trouble. "I- "No, Miss Turner, I don't want excuses, I want an apology. "But why?" I asked.

"I've done nothing wrong!" I exclaimed. "That is for me to decide and you to obey." Mr. Belfrey said, with a hint of smugness in his tone.

"Fine, if you'll let me go home." I bartered. "Of course, Abigail, but first I have to talk to you about something." Mr. Belfrey said with an air of finality in his voice.

"Ugh. Okay, I'm sorry, Mr. Belfrey. I should have paid attention during class so that I could give you a good answer.

"Thank you, Abigail. Now, I'd like to talk to you about what your past teachers have told me about you." I groaned and Mr. Belfrey pulled out some pieces of paper.

"It says here that you have not had to much success academically, is that correct? "No, Mr. Belfrey, my teachers were making that up." I said sarcastically.

"I don't appreciate the sarcasm, Miss Turner. But, considering you said 'no' sarcastically, I am being led to believe that the information that I have been given could not be more true."

I felt my face turn red, I had not expected my sarcasm to backfire. "Anyway," Mr. Belfrey continued.

"I hope you'll make more of an effort this year. You can start by working on tonight's essay."

Yeah right, I thought. He actually expects me to do that? Fat chance.

"Normally," Mr. Belfrey said. "I would keep any students in detention for half an hour or so to work on class work or homework, but I already told you that you could go home. So have a good afternoon, Abigail!"

I hurried out of the school and rushed home. My mom was going to kill me. I was supposed to be home at 3:45, and it's already 3:15.

I sighed. I had a long 4 miles to walk. But to tell you the truth, the hardest part would be going back to an angry mother.
