"We should make a marriage pact," Taylor whispered into the darkness. She was half talking to herself, and half hoping you were still awake to hear her.
"That'd be cool," Came your voice from the other side of the bed.
You two had been friends for as long as you can remember. You'd met in elementary school and been tight ever since Taylor invited you to sit with her during lessons. Nothing could break you two apart. Today was your birthday. You'd just turned 16 and had a small party with close friends as usual, but only Taylor was invited to stay the night.
"You think?" She grinned in the darkness, rolling over to face you.
"Yeah! We could make up cool rules and shit. Plus, I'm too ugly to ever be in a relationship so it's nice to have something to fall back on."
"You're beautiful." She whispered, nose wrinkling after you'd just insulted yourself. Taylor thought you were the most beautiful person to ever grace this planet. So any time you were upset about your appearance, she'd tell you that you were the prettiest girl she'd ever met. Because you deserved to hear it. And because she really believed it.
"You always say that," you laughed, "anyway, when would we get married? How old? Ground rules?"
You could hear her stirring on her side of the bed as she fiddled with the sheets and thought of answers.
"Thirty. If neither of us are married by thirty, we'll just elope. Ground rules? I don't know, what do you think?"
Taylor bit her lip as you met her eyes in the darkness and started spewing rules that you genuinely believed in, and a few designed just to make her laugh. 'Date whoever you want before then.' She could do that. 'Move to a small village and forget about everyone.' She wished you could do that. 'Ice cream always has to be in the house.' She laughed at that.
"Those are all very solid rules," she commented after you finished your train of thought.
"Thank you! Write them down in a journal or something so we don't forget."
She reached over to the nightstand to turn on a dim light and search for a journal. The room presented itself in a soft orangey glow that made everything look warm and cozy. As she got up, you rolled back over and closed your eyes. Taylor couldn't help but notice how ethereal you looked when she turned around. With your hair all spread out behind you on the pillow, eyelids fluttering as they tried to block out light, and lips slight parted; you looked absolutely angelic. She smiled slightly at the view while scribbling your rules into a cheap composition book and tucking it into her bag. She stayed up for a little longer, watching you stir in your sleep and mumble incoherent sentences and words as you dreamt.
The bed dipped when she got back in and you shifted slightly to give her room. She turned off the light and whispered goodnight to you. Taylor also told you that she loved you. She told you that every night, whether through a text or in person when she dropped you off at home. She always meant it a little more than she thought you knew, too. You'd never tell her, but you felt her eyes on you the whole time she was awake, and that you liked it. It made you feel safe. Wanted. Loved. You'd keep this to yourself though, because she was your best friend who'd never feel anything but platonic towards you. Right?
But little did you know that Taylor felt the exact same way. And she was counting on the years going by quickly so that she could live out your marriage pact. You felt the same way, and made a silent promise to yourself to wait on her until you were thirty and she was ready.
