It was currently 9:30 pm, and the Yahaba residence was quiet. Too quiet for Shigeru's liking. He usually liked his peace but this time was different. His parents went away for the whole weekend, visiting some distant relatives. Shigeru got invited too but seeing an opportunity to spent the whole weekend with his boyfriend, he decided to stay home.

However, his whole plan crumbled a few hours ago, shortly after he and Kyotani left the school grounds. Kyotani was grumpy since morning for some reason, barely looking at Shigeru during lunch and doing everything to avoid him during practice. When Shigeru tried to ask what was wrong, he got only gruff: "I'm fine, leave me alone."

Shigeru knew better than to push Kyotani further, but the whole thing left him confused. They were absolutely fine the day before, walking home together like every day since they got together shortly after Spring High, sharing a short goodbye kiss in front of Yahaba's house that always left Kyotani flushed to the tips of his ears, and texting till Shigeru fell asleep.

He waited for Kyotani to change after practice leaning against the wall behind the school gate. He hoped that the usual routine would ease whatever was on Kentaro's mind. Maybe he was just having a bad day?

Shigeru saw him marching towards the gate, head hung low and the usual scowl on his face.

"Kyo?"

He moved from the wall but stopped, baffled, when Kyotani didn't seem to slow down around him. He didn't even look at him.

"Kyo!" he tried again. "Slow down! Kentaro!"

Kyotani winced with the use of his given name and stopped but still refused to look at him.

Shigeru caught up with him, placing his hand on Kyotani's shoulder, which he immediately shrugged off.

"What's wrong with you today? You act like you failed a class."

"What do you want?" Kyotani no less than growled at him which made Shigeru take an involuntary step back.

"Well ... go home with my boyfriend for example?"

Kyotani huffed, averting his gaze.

"And I wanted to ask if you want to come over for the weekend. My parents are away till Sunday."

"Don't have time."

Shigeru was stunned. Something was definitely wrong. Despite his appearance and attitude towards most people, Kyotani was deep inside a big softie and never missed the opportunity to spend some time alone with Shigeru.

"O-oh. Never mind then. I guess I should have said something earlier, right? Well, can we at least go home together?"

"If you miss company that much, why don't you go with that Shibata girl, hm?"

"Who?"

"Oh, now you don't know? That girl who gave you the confession letter last week. The one you said you fucking rejected. The one you spent the whole damn morning with!"

Shigeru's mind wandered to the lunch break a week ago. The girl was pretty, with long black hair and soft eyes which darted everywhere when she handed him the letter and a bento box with homemade lunch, blush spreading over her cheeks. He politely rejected her on spot, explaining that he was already happily in a relationship. She understood, apologizing but insisted on Shigeru keeping the lunch she made. Which was something he couldn't refuse.

"That's what is this about?" he asked in disbelief. "I was just giving her back the bento box."

Kyotani finally raised his gaze, looking sharply into Shigeru's eyes.

"And what is so funny about returning some box that made you laugh so hard and allowed her to go all touchy with you, hm? Are you already tired of your stupid ugly boyfriend that you are already looking for someone else?"

Shigeru was rendered speechless for a moment. He couldn't believe the words that just left Kyotani's mouth.

"What are you talking about? I'm not tired of you, I like you!"

He was starting to feel desperate, not knowing what to do.

"Whatever," Kyotani snarled and pushed Shigeru out of his way.

"Kyo!"

"Don't 'Kyo' me Yahaba, leave me alone!" he growled and sped up towards his home without looking back, leaving heartbroken Shigeru standing in the middle of the street.

And now here he was, curled on the bed, not paying any attention to the movie he put on his laptop in the hope it will help him to come to other thoughts. He tried to call Kyotani several times before he even got home, always with the same result of the call being denied. He sent him a few messages which were all left on Read.

Closing the laptop, he decided to give Kentaro time till tomorrow to cool off a bit and then try again, but that didn't stop his thoughts from spiralling down into the pit of overthinking.

What if he won't listen to me? What if the damage is done? What if he breaks up with me?

Shigeru felt the panic rising again in his chest. He felt so pathetic for his shaking hands and tears threatening to spill from his eyes. He forced his breathing to even by taking a few deep inhales and exhales.

It's going to be fine. He will listen. We'll settle it. We always do, right? Everything will be like it was before.

He desperately wanted to believe that.

............................

It was shortly after 11 when Shigeru was jolted awake from his thoughts by the sound of the main door closing. He frowned. He was sure his parents wouldn't come back home earlier without telling him and except for them and Shigeru, no one else had the keys to their house.

He quietly tiptoed to the door to his room and listened. There were two muffled male voices he didn't recognize coming from downstairs.

"Are you sure this place is empty?"

"Yes, they are out of the city till Sunday. Let's see what they have. They should be quite rich."

Shigeru felt his heartbeat speed up. He remembered hearing about the increased robbery rate in the area in the last two months in the news, but he never thought their house could be targeted.

He carefully closed the door with shaking hands, trying to make as little noise as possible. His knees almost gave up on him as he franticly looked over the whole room, looking for something, anything, that would help him.

Crawling across the room on all four to his nightstand, he grabbed his phone and curling up in a ball next to his bed, he called the first number he saw.
