"I'm just going to jump right in then." I say, looking at Yasmeen. "But before I do, I need your word that you will never repeat what I'm going to tell you. It's an extremely delicate and a touchy subject for me."
"I promise, you can trust me Kat. I would never tell anyone anything about what I can see affects you so much." She replies.
"I have a mate. A fated mate. I know its unheard of and I don't know why, but I was given a unique gift by the moon goddess. A gift is what Zarah calls and considers it. It's always seemed like a curse to me." I scoff. I see Zarah roll her eyes, "It's a gift Kat, even if you can't understand it."
"Gift? What gift?" Yasmeen questions
"I was able to recognize my mate when I was twelve. We went to the same school. He's from a rival pack now, but we went to middle and high school together, because at the time our packs were not rivals. He was a year above me. He was there tonight, which is why I panicked."
"What? How were you able to recognize him when you were twelve? Could he detect you? Does he know? Wait, did you guys reject each other?" She blurts out.
"I'll explain everything. I was twelve coming out of a class when I smelt the most intoxicating scent, the scent of the earth after it just rains, mixed with the smell of pinecones. I love the way the earth smells after it rains. I followed the smell, something in me just tugged at me to go after it. I walked at high speed in the hallways and accidently bumped into someone, falling down. As I looked up, I saw there was a boy, who offered me his hand to pull me up. As I placed my hand in his, I felt shocks and tingles go off all through out my body. I was confused at first, not able to understand what had happened. I was twelve of course. He asked me if I was okay, but I just looked at him, unable to respond. So he shrugged his shoulders and walked off. It was then that I realized he didn't feel the sparks. I didn't think much of it, just went back to my classes. I didn't understand that he was my mate. I just felt extremely drawn to him. I started following him around to get a whiff of that amazing smell. I developed a huge crush on him and started noticing these little things about him, he had this patch of hair growing on the back of his neck, he rolled his tounge over his teeth often while he was thinking about something, he was great at sports, and got great grades too. The thing I noticed most was how kind he was, welcoming of new students, smiling at strangers in the hall. Anyways, at this point, I still didn't know he was my mate. When I turned thirteen, our high school which was exclusively for werewolves of-course started having introductory classes on werewolf inclusive things, names of packs, our histories, who we descended from, but most importantly for me, the topic of mates." I took a deep breath. Zarah notices what talking about this stuff does to me, so she chimes up, telling me she could tell the next part.
She says, "I remember the day in school that we all knew there was gonna be a discussion about mates. Everyone was buzzing in excitement. After all finding your mate is a huge thing in the werewolf world. Kat and I headed into our class and sat somewhere in the middle as Miss Sarah starts talking. She explains why werewolves have mates, how they complete us, and how when we turn 18, we can identify them. We can't identify them before because we get our wolves at 15 and it takes a couple of years to become one with your wolf. She begins to explain the ways in which you identify your mate: Smell and then touch, the tingles and sparks, the way you are drawn to them, how they appeal to you in every way. As miss Sarah goes on, I turned to say something to Kat and saw her getting a little fidgety. She always gets fidgety when she's nervous or in deep thought. Since that was the last class of the day, we walked home together but Kat didn't say a word, didn't reply to anything I said so I knew something was definitely up. I dragged her off onto a secluded patch of forest once we were close to the pack lands and told her to come out with it, which she finally did, telling me about the incident that she talked about earlier. It was then that we realized Kat was able to identify her mate. What you see of Kat now is very different from who she was. She was shy, naïve, and used to blush incessantly every time someone even mentioned his name. She even dressed different, extremely loose clothes to hide her figure since she hit puberty early, geeky glasses, hair always up in a tight pony-tail. Very different from the hot-head, fierce, demanding, confident woman she is now." She says teasingly.
