Nikki looked down at her new shoes as she walked down the cracked pavement. This was her first day of High school. She could feel her hands sweating, she wiped them against her black jeans.
She wasn't ready, she felt like she was growing too fast like her mother told her before she left her house this morning. It was too late now though, The sign for West Lawrence was sitting right in front of her face mocking her.
She could feel the signs eyes burn in the back of her head as she moved towards the front gate. It was black and it was already open. Which didn't surprise her as she wasn't exactly early. She hesitated before entering. The thought of running crossed her mind and she could feel her feet move slightly as if they already decided for her.
Although Nikki would rather claw her eyes out, she still forced herself to move forward. She stopped near a bench near the entrance of the gate to place her backpack. She needed to grab her schedule, which she had thrown somewhere in the depths of her bag. After a couple of seconds of digging, she found it. AP English, huh.
She checked the room number, 290 CM. She looked at the surrounding buildings around her until she saw one with CM on the front. She quickly walked forward. She walked by kids she knew. Kids that have known her for years. They didn't even spare a single glance towards her, and she didn't do the same for them either.
It didn't matter anyway, they weren't in middle school anymore. She didn't know them well anyways, she never had the same classes. Nikki worked her ass off in middle school, and she was planning to do the same thing here too. That's how Nikki, a freshmen, landed AP classes. She was great, and she would do anything to keep it that way.
Little did she know that perfection isn't easily reached. Not naturally at least. Even then perfect only seems perfect to the beholder.
