     "Sam and I are dating."

I still remember how deep those words cut into my skin, making me shutter and cringe, as her and I stared at each other.

I knew that the day would come, but I hadn't expected it to be that soon. I figured that I'd still have a few more years until my heart would shatter into a million pieces over an announcement, but oh man, was I wrong.

So wrong.

"Amalia?"

I blinked quickly, forcing myself out of the troubling thoughts that Maris' announcement had put me in, and focused on her dark, welcoming eyes. "Hm?"

"D-Did you hear me?"

"No," I shook my head, hoping that I heard her incorrectly. "What did you say?"

"Samuel and I," she started again, her dimples beginning to show as her lips curved into shy smirk. "We're dating, he asked me out a few days ago."

I had never wanted to disappear more than I did in that moment. I wanted to cry, but I didn't. I wanted to scream, but I didn't. I just sat there, a weak smile on my face, as she waited for my response. "Really?" I finally spoke, my voice cracking and shaking. "I'm surprised you didn't tell us when it happened."

Maris shrugged, fidgeting with her fingers. "I was going to, but I know that Wes and Remi don't necessarily get along with Samuel, so I was a bit nervous."

I nodded, moving my eyes away from her and beginning to pull at the grass as I got lost in my thoughts once again. For some reason, I felt like hitting Maris, and I didn't know why. Maybe it was the fact that I had been madly in love with her for four years, and she was now getting into a relationship with somebody else.

I didn't know.

Maris cut into our silence and spoke again, her soft voice making me meet her eyes with my own. "Are you okay with him and I dating?"

"Uh," I shrugged, biting back the harsh insults that I wanted to spit in her face. "Yeah, I'm okay with it. As long as you're happy, I'm happy."

Maris' nervous expression softened with a warm smile as she looked at me, her eyes set into mine and sending chills down my spine just as they did in fourth grade that day. "I love you, Amalia." She said, before throwing her arms around me and pulling me into one of her warm, comforting embraces.
