I saw you
With that ribbon in your hair
Think that I began to stare
Maybe I'll love you for a while

Ashlyn was one of the regulars at the pizza place, showing up every day with that same red ribbon in her hair and a script book. She didn't talk much, but he knew her usual order by heart: pizza with no pepperoni, just tomato sauce, and pineapples and olives. She'd also order some espresso to go with it, which was an interesting choice. Big Red thought it was disgusting to have coffee with pizza, but the heart wants what it wants.

He's seen her there since the summer of fifth grade, and she never missed a day since. It's been six years, as they're both sophomores in high school now, but she's always there.

A stranger at a table in a place
And a really pretty face
I wonder what happens when you smile

Even though she visited every day, she was still sort of a stranger, as no one knew her that well. Well, not enough to answer a list of trivial questions about her.

I might never be your hero
Never been one to fight
That don't mean that I can't be your Valentine
I won't be your savior either
Couldn't even if I tried
But I think I could be someone you like
Someone you like

In tenth grade, where the guys had joked about Red and Ashlyn together, he turned redder than his hair and said that he probably could never. He did think he loved her, maybe, but he likely wasn't the knight in shining armor of her dreams. He wasn't one of those dashing heroes who'd swoop in and save his princess at the last second.

"She'll like you either way," Ricky assured. "I swear, you've been looking at her like a lost dog for six years, except you never went to have a conversation with her. You can ask her out to the Valentine's dance this weekend, or just...talk to her. Literally, it's been forever, and you're still the only single one of the East High group."

Hiding shy behind my hair
Watching our movie in my mind
I promise
Promise not to fly away
Make a story of today
Come on give me a try

The looks he sent her didn't go unnoticed. Ashlyn always did want to chat with him, but the introverted redheads were too shy and scared of the other's response. In her mind, Ashlyn wrote their story. Two people in a pizza place, eventually ending in a great romance not quite as tragic as Shakespeare's. She promised, that if he gave her a chance, she wouldn't leave.

I might never be your hero

But I think I'd like to try
And the way you look at me is your reply
You got a lot to learn about me
Maybe you could start tonight
'Cause I think I could be someone you like
Someone you like

That brisk February night, after closing time, Big Red hung up his apron and went to the tab;e where Ashlyn was sitting. He took a deep breath and prepared himself to do something he'd wanted to do since he was 11.

"Hey."

"Hey," she smiled, setting down her book.

Big Red cleared his throat. Suddenly, he felt like he had the flu, but he just needed to get this over with quickly.

"Ashlyn, is it? Umm...yeah, so I was wondering if you'd want to be my date to the Valentine's dance. I know it's probably ridiculous that I even asked, it's just that my friends dared me to. Gosh, Ricky, seriously, you know I suck at asking girls out because I've never talked to one that isn't my mom! If you say no, I totally-"

"Sure," she answered.

"Alright, I best be going now--wait, WHAT?!" Red stopped in his tracks.

"I said I'd love to go."

"Oh, okay, then. Friday night, next week?"

"Wouldn't miss it."

The two redheads sat at the table, grinning cheesily at each other.

Perhaps this could be the start of something new between the two.

I haven't done a songfic in a while, but I hope y'all enjoyed it!!!

Keep reading. Keep writing. Keep dreaming.
