Lightning cracked bright against the black of the New York skyline. Police sirens cried out halfway across the city, a homeless man sat alone on a street corner, a drunk man stumbled out of a bar, and a child walked home from the park with her family. It was a night that was not unlike others. This, however, would soon change.
Krakakoom!
A brilliant, blue swirling light materialized above one of the many skyscrapers of the city. Azul lightning crackled and popped and boiled the very air in which it stroked. The energetic mass began to convulse, almost as if receiving some sort of cosmic Heimlich maneuver. While initially appearing as a round shape, it stretched into a column of energy nearly a mile long into the air before abruptly crashing down upon itself. An incomprehensible shockwave of energy echoed throughout the atmosphere and spewed a figure from the spiraling light. A woman, fully conscious, fell from over 100 feet towards the nearest rooftop. She landed with such a tremendous impact that, under normal circumstances for a normal woman, would have shattered every bone in her body and displayed her internal organs as modern art on the brick; however, these were most certainly not normal circumstances, and this was far from a normal woman. She slowly stood, her head throbbing and her heart pounding.
Doc... the portal... the mission... the mission!
Charlie's hand immediately found its way to her earpiece, and she desperately tried to radio out to her colleague. Unfortunately, the only response she received was incessant radio static. Frowning, she looked around. Clearly, she was in a city of some sort, but it looked unfamiliar to her. She began to check her inventory, taking note of her gadgets and weaponry that survived the chaotic trip through the Bridge. She paused, though, sensing something moves behind her. Hesitating for a second, Charlie called out into the night,
"You can come out now. I know you're there."
Across the rooftop, amongst the shadows, two yellow eyes appeared. Slowly, the owner stepped out of the shadows, revealing a black shape shrouded in a dark, flowing cloak.
"Quite the landing you had there."
The voice was deep and booming while simultaneously cold and calculating.
"You saw?"
"The whole thing."
Charlie turned to face the mysterious character.
"Well, aren't you tall, dark, and scary?"
"You're going to find out I'm a lot of other things if you don't tell me who the hell you are and what the hell you're doing in my city."
Charlie tilted her head back and laughed, her cackles echoing out into the night.
"Are you threatening me? Buddy, I don't think you know who you're talking to. But that's fine. I don't think people around here know who I am anyway." She brushed her black hair out of her face, then shined her pearl-white teeth. "Run along, gruesome. Before you get hurt."
The young woman turned and began to rummage through her items again, performing diagnostics checks and other standard maintenance procedures. She turned to look back at the shroud but was surprised to see that he had vanished.
"What the hell- "
"Who are you, and what are you doing here?"
The voice was right behind her now, and Charlie whipped around to see that the Night Hunter was mere inches from her face. She yelped, jumping back in alarm.
