(Chapter 1) {Opening}'
Perhaps it was hubris or just stubborn pride that set me on my journey west with the help from Wendy and her children.
My first instinct was to refuse the offer of a teaching post in Coal Valley.
My education certainly qualified me for the post, but I feared my privileged upbringing might leave me ill-prepared and unequipped to brave the hardships and dangers out west.
It was my sister, Julie, who bolstered my resolve because she so doubted my fortitude.
She'd tried to frighten me with tales of cowboys, whiskey-runners and outlaws, but it only emboldened my determination to prove to her and my parents that I am Elizabeth Thatcher, a strong, independent, capable woman.' - Elizabeth thought.
(Wendlyn)
The journey was bumpy until we ran into some outlaws who took our money as the stage driver did an runner leaving us, the stage and our bags while Elizabeth was shocked over what the outlaws did so I repacked our bags so the kids have an bag filled with their everyday clothes then I did the same with mine and Elizabeth clothes. Beth and I carried a bag each and started walking towards town but we were saved by an gentleman who gave us an lift into town. Elizabeth went into the shop while I stayed outside with my children as they played tag until a ball hit Margaret's legs making her call out so Edmund kicked the ball back at an lad who in turn carried out to so while I was dealing with Margaret and Edmund the boys father come over.
"I think your son needs to apologise to my son" he said
"After he apologise to my daughter, My son was only standing up for his sister" I replied
"This turn George?" he asked
"The ball hit her not me" George answered
"I'm sorry for my son, I'm Anthony Gowen." He said
"I'm sorry for Edmund doing and I'm Mrs Barrow, Newly widow" I replied
"Oh, Sorry for your lost" He said
By that time Elizabeth and three women come out, we looked towards them after Elizabeth called out so I called my children over when they made the last step Mr Gowen greet the ladies then we made our way to the saloon where Elizabeth and I were told everything.
"the superintendent of schools did tell you what happened here?" Abigail Stanton asked
"No, he didn't." Elizabeth answered
"[Sighs] Three months ago, there was a terrible explosion in the mine. 47 brave men lost their lives, and many of us lost our husbands and our sons. Many of our children became fatherless that day." Abigail explained
"I'm so sorry. I didn't realize." Elizabeth said"
What she's saying is that we don't have any need for a... A princess." Florence Blakeley said
"I assure you I am not a..." Elizabeth replied
"It would be the mothers who are paying your salary. For many of us, our children are the only thing we have left, and, well, their education is all that we have control over, so whomever we entrust them to must be fearless. You would not just be teaching them to read and write, you will be fighting for their future." Cat Montgomery said
Elizabeth asked for a chance to prove herself to them so they agreed to try so Abigail told Elizabeth where we could stay for now and Elizabeth was happy until she saw the mouse making everyone jump a little as my children laugh.
"Vermin and I are not usually on such friendly terms." Elizabeth said
"One week is going to be a long time." Florence replied
Abigail showed us to the teacherage where Beth tried to use the outhouse then tried to light the stove but failed then set the place on fire after leaving her dress arm in the heater so the fire moved quickly thought the house, Elizabeth was upset and shocked over the fire so Abigail let us stay with her for now. Elizabeth and Abigail talked about finding our way or footing as Elizabeth head to school with us as we wait for the other parents, when they come they told Elizabeth what they wanted while Cat stop them and Elizabeth confused them as I smiled and Face them.
"Ladies Elizabeth understands her role here" I said
When the parents left their children with Elizabeth, she set some rules for the class but it was stopped by a whistle blowing making the children run out as a few stayed to tell Elizabeth what is happening Elizabeth told the children to follow her as they head to the mine where they met up with Abigail and and myself as an gentlemen told the town they found a message but the men stood in front of their boss car as he tried to leave, the sound of hooves were heard, everyone looked to see someone in red riding towards the car as one of the children asked who they were.
"That's a Mountie" Elizabeth said
As the Mountie asked for the women to hand over an sample of their dead writing and the boss asked who he is to which he replied
"Name is Jack Thornton. I'm the new Constable of Coal Valley." Jack said
(Elizabeth)
I was putting today's lesson on the chalkboard when I heard footsteps, turn to see the new Mountie so I started talking to him.
"Oh. Hello. I didn't know anyone else was here." I said
"Good morning. I'm staying in one of the rooms upstairs until something more permanent can be arranged." he replied
"I'm Elizabeth Thatcher, I'm the new teacher here, but I guess you've probably already gathered that." I said
"Constable Jack Thornton, but I guess you've already gathered that." He replied
"I'm sorry. I'm afraid I may have left you with some of my chalk dust." I said
"No. No chalk dust. Now I feel cheated." He replied
"I have to say I'm a little surprised that Coal Valley merits a full-time Mountie." I wondered
"That makes two of us. My original posting was in Cape Fullerton, but that suddenly changed." Jack said
"Oh. I imagine Coal Valley will be a little quieter for you than a busy shipping port like that." I said
"Wait, you know the place?" Jack asked
"Very well. My father has done business in Cape Fullerton for many years." I answered
"And what's your father's name?" Jack asked
"William Thatcher." I answered
"William Thatcher the shipping tycoon?" Jack asked
"Well, I don't think of him that way, but, yes, I suppose he is." I answered
"Now it's all making sense." He said
"What is?" I asked
"Miss Thatcher, a week ago, I had never even heard of Coal Valley, and while I was planning my trip to Cape Fullerton, I was told I was being reassigned here, reassigned at the request of a very powerful man." He answered
"Surely, you don't think that..." I said
"What, that a very wealthy man's daughter might be why I now have to eat coal dust for the next God knows how long? I'm absolutely sure that's why I'm here, to keep William Thatcher's princess from stubbing her toe in a town she had no business coming to." he replied
"To be candid, sir, I think you're way off-base with that remark, and just so we're clear, even if my father did pull strings to get you here, I don't need you. I can take care of my own stubbed toes, thank you very much." I said
"You know, on second thought, it's obvious I won't have to be here long, because you won't last a month in a town like this." he replied
"Well, Constable Thornton, I think you'd better settle in and get used to a steady diet of coal dust. I'm a Thatcher. We don't run from a challenge. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have reading materials to prepare for my students. Good day to you, sir." I said
