"Kagami, you cannot run around Paris with your friend. It's not safe. You are an honorable Tsurugi and nothing must happen to you. And you cannot be seen making a fool of yourself," my mother says sternly.
"But we'll just be at her parents' bakery. Please mom-" I start to say before Marinette seizes my phone. "Marinette, don't!" What is she doing?! This is going to end badly for both of us.
Marinette is so sweet for trying, but my mother is never going to change her mind. She thinks everything is dangerous for me, but really she's afraid that what I do, as a teenager, might be dangerous to her reputation. Everything is distasteful, and as "honorable Tsurugis," we must only take part in "noble" practices and arts. Hide away at home and be lonely forever because one mistake will ruin our family name... Sometimes I want to run away. Disappear. Go someplace where I can just be a kid. I don't even think my mother would care if I just vanished. Actually, she would care. She would care about how my running away would affect the way her colleagues look at her, what the papers would say about her. Not my safety. That would never be a concern. But I still won't do that to her because I'm her daughter, and I was raised to respect my elders. So I will follow her mindlessly no matter how much I wish I could change it all.
I look back at Marinette again. She's smiling. Why is she smiling? Was she actually able to change my mother's mind?
"We have one hour," she hands me my phone with the biggest smirk on her face. How did she- My jaw drops. That girl is more amazing than I ever thought.
"Well, are you coming or not?" she asks me. She's so sarcastic and sassy when she's feeling confident. It's adorable.
I get a hold over myself, and I follow her out of the school. This has been a pretty great first day.
Marinette lives close to our school. Only a few blocks away, and she decided that running to her place would be fun.
"I'll race ya, Kagami," she winks.
"Marinette, I don't think that's a good idea," I reply. She's the clumsiest person I know and I don't want to see her get hurt.
"Why are you scared I'll beat you?"
"No that's not it. Mari-" she cuts me off.
"Miss fencing champion is afraid the uncoordinated fashion designer will beat her in a race," she teases.
"Haha, yeah right. I'm not afraid of you. Let's race then." I guess I'm a little competitive.
"Okay... 3, 2, 1 go," she blurts out and runs as fast as she can. She laughs maniacally, while I stand there smiling as she beats me in a race. Wait, she's ahead of me. There's no way I'm letting her win.
I dash after her, and I can feel the breeze against my face, my hair flying behind me. I notice little things happening around me, all the joy. A little boy enjoying his ice cream, a group of girls laughing as they walk into the boutique, a couple relishing each other's company. I guess everyone is having as good of a day as I am. I never get to see any of this sitting in Tatsu, isolated from everything. Let alone experience it. I've had more fun with Marinette today than I have my entire life so far. I never want this to end.
I see the bakery up ahead of me and I'm right behind Marinette now- A dog. I love dogs. I stop and pet the grey french bulldog. I never get to be around them because my mother is allergic, so I'm gonna take advantage of the opportunity.
"Ow!" I hear Marinette cry. I look up and she's on the ground.
"Mari!" I sprint to her and help her up. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I got distracted and I ran into a lamppost," she lets out a small chuckle.
"You need some ice. Let's go inside," I say.
