Sometimes, it's easy to skim a book. When you skim a book, it doesn't take as long to read. When you only read the dialogue, you miss the paragraphs that you deem unimportant- paragraphs that might not be as unimportant as you think.
Sometimes, paragraphs that seem really long are only long because they are complex. Because they include feelings that you'll regret acknowledging once you reach the breaking point of the story.
Sometimes, it's better to skip those paragraphs. Because then, you won't feel the pain these characters do. The worst kind of pain is not physical. Getting a paper cut or a bruise, or even a deep gash on your knee would be better than the pain you'd feel. Do you want to feel pain?
"This is stupid."
"Yeah, it is. But it was your idea."
"Well, my idea is stupid and it legitimately sucks so I don't know why you would take my advice-"
"Well, we're already here so we might as well-"
"She's going to know it was from you-"
"We have got nothing to lose. You're just afraid she's not going to like you!"
Louise Morrette sat on the burgundy, carpeted floor with her knees brought up to her chest. Her elbows were propped up on her knees and her arms were extended outwards. One of her hands was holding an open letter. Her gaze was focused on the open window across the room and she could see an owl in the distance.
She could hear the bickering of well-known voices from outside her dorm room but she ignored them, assuming that they were talking about one of the other Prefects. There were only two other female Prefects on this floor, since this was just the Gryffindor tower.
"Just do it already!"
"Why can't we just go back to the familiar, home-y place of jokesters? Our dorm-"
"Shut it and do it, you wuss!"
"I am not a wuss!"
The growing annoyance in the boy's voice was recognizable. At least to Louise it was. It didn't stop the other boy from continuing though.
"Prove it then. Do it."
"Georgie-"
"Fred!"
"Fine."
There was a small, almost silent, whooshing sound. A pink envelope slid under the door, causing Louise to glance down. She thought they were going to do something much more horrible, and to a different Prefect, considering that Louise believed she was non-existent at her dumb boarding school.
The front of the envelope was completely blank, although there was a small, slightly smudged fingerprint at the top right corner. The light ink was pushed off the side of the envelope, like someone accidentally left a mark on the corner and horribly attempted to remove it.
Louise slowly picked it up and turned it over. It wasn't even sealed. The flap of the envelope was tucked in nicely, with the exception of a crumple at the edge.
"I can't believe that just happened. Merlin, you are such an idiot! I've got to go get it back-"
"How? You're going to break into her dorm room-"
"I mean, she's probably at dinner right now! You know, with the rest of the normal students here-"
"We're drifting now! You can't just break into her dorm-"
"I've done it to Johnson's dorm when I thought that broomstick polish she had was making her fly magically-"
"She's got talent-"
