Something sharp was digging into my side. The faint but consistent pain made me stir, though my mind felt like it was wrapped in a haze of fog.
"Ugh..." I groaned, blinking slowly as I woke. The surroundings of the cave came back to me, along with the memories of everything that had happened last night. I looked down and my eyes widened. The boy had gone boneless at my side, his head resting on my shoulder and elbow digging into my ribs. His breaths came evenly and he looked much better than when I'd found him. Well, what am I supposed to do now?? I don't want to wake him up. I couldn't stop staring at his peaceful expression. For the millionth time, I wondered who he was and where he came from.
"...fire went out..." he mumbled. I flinched in shock, nearly knocking his head off my shoulder. "Ow." he said in a flat tone.
"Y-you're awake." I said dumbly.
"Fire's out." he repeated. Of course, all that remained was a pile of dark stumps of charcoal and a couple glowing coals. I quickly rekindled the flames, being careful as possible to not disturb the boy. He sighed and leaned against me even further, if that was possible. I tried to relax but my heart was beating crazily fast.
"H-hey... are you alright? I found you in the middle of an insane storm last night. And you've got all these burns..." When my fingertip brushed over a burn on the back of his hand, he flinched, pulling it up to his chest. "I can get something to help, if you let me move."
"Move...?" He looked up with a confused expression- and the moment he met my eyes, my throat went dry. His large eyes, framed by dark lashes, held galaxies of violet, lavender, and cobalt. I'd never seen anything so beautiful. I hoped he didn't see the warmth I felt rising to my face. He didn't move for a long moment... but then he blinked and jolted into action, reeling backwards, eyes widening.
"Wait-" I reached out to steady him but he slapped my hand away.
"Who are you?! How did I get here?!" he cried, voice shrill and panicked.
"Whoa, slow down. I don't mean any harm." I said, raising my hands. "I was out in the blizzard last night- there was lightning too. I was nearby, and while I was moving... I found you."
Confusion and doubt flashed over his expression. "Who are you?" he repeated.
"Oh, y/n. Just a traveler passing through." I gave a little smile. I have more questions than I can count... but he looks so overwhelmed, I'm just going to give him space.
The boy blinked rapidly, a red tint spreading on his cheeks. "Y/n... you were the one who brought me here?" he said with another glance around the cave.
"Yeah. It's pretty far away from where the lightning storm was." I cleared my throat. "And you are?"
"... You may call me Scaramouche." he said stiffly. His eyes narrowed with a steely glint in them. What happened to the boy leaning against me just minutes ago?
"Well, it's good to meet you, Scaramouche. I'm really glad you're alright." I smiled. Scaramouche blinked several times, still flushed. "Or, I mean, mostly alright. You still have a few burns. But I have lots of supplies..."
"I'm fine." He crossed his arms, turning away from me. "I need to leave as soon as possible." I really can't figure him out... his personality seems to change every other moment.
"We can't go anywhere." I said, glancing at the crevice. Solid ice. I could feel the chill over the fire. "Not yet."
"No..." I turned my head at Scaramouche's whisper. His eyes widened and he shoved himself upright. "It can't be."
