Kageyama Tobio hated when things were out of his control.
He liked to be in charge of what happened around him, or at least know about the things. Like, who played on his team, if practice time changed, how high he needed to toss the ball. He was a setter after all.
He had to get his team to win. He needed to be perfect. And for that, he needed to be in control.
He thought he was.
Then that match happened. Everything was going smoothly. He was perfect. He did everything he could. But he was left all alone. Nobody was there to spike. Then they sat him on the bench and for the first time in his life, he lost the control over the situation.
Later that year his grandfather passed away. Once again, he was reminded that he could not control everything in his life. It irked him.
He tried his best to get into Shiratorizawa, to play volleyball with the best players, but he couldn't get in there either. It really seemed like life was ganging up on him.
So when he saw that orange haired boy standing in the doorway of the Karasuno gym, he felt like he received his final push.
Hinata was someone Kageyama absolutely could not control. He was loud, got way over excited over things, was in everybody's face, was loud, was over-energetic, was so optimistic it was abnormal in Kageyama's mind, oh, and did he mention loud?
He almost got kicked out of the team because of that midget. He didn't want to work with him. He was perfectly fine on his own.
But he had no other choice. So he finally took some control back. He thought Hinata how to receive until the boy could do it somewhat decent. But only because he wanted to play on the team.
Soon after, it turned out that Hinata was the one he was actually looking for. Someone who could spike his tosses without a problem, someone that would always be there, waiting for the ball to arrive. A partner. And for the first time in his life, even if he would never admit it out loud, Kageyama was happy about something he could not control. Because he wasn't standing there all alone anymore.

School was dreadful. That was the best way to describe it. In all honesty, Kageyama did not care about any of the classes, his mind was already at the afternoon practice. They had to work some new tactics out with Hinata to get better at their attacks. Hinata has been a bit out of it lately, being slightly slower, but he said it was because of a cold and that he would be back in shape in a few days.
Kageyama, after scolding him for several minutes for going out underdressed in the cold weather and risking his health and therefore their practice, talked to Daichi about the whole situation, who issued a few days of rest and then restarting practice for the boy.
Finally, the bell that signaled the end of classes rang, and Kageyama was out the classroom door in a flash, heading towards their clubroom to change.
Hinata was already inside with Nishinoya and Sugawara.
"Hi." He said walking in.
"Ah, Kageyama." Hinata's attention was immediately turned to him. Kageyama had to admit, the boy looked way better than a few days ago. The color returned to his face and it seemed like he got his annoying amount of energy back too.
"I thought we could practice the quick attack today." He was practicaly jumping up and down from excitement.
"Hinata, don't push yourself too hard." Suga tried warning the boy.
Kageyama had to agree with him. If Hinata pushed himself to his limits like he usually tended to do so, he could relapse and that would mean an even longer time off of practice. So he took a deep breath and with the most even tone possible, said to Hinata.
