Tony and Rhodey both blast their repulsors at each other, getting Vanko in the crossfire. When he dies, the drones are all programmed to self-destruct so Tony gets to work flying Pepper away for the damage. When he gets home, it's to a crying and scared Taeyong who needs reassurance that his dad is not dead and not going to leave him.

At the end of it all, Tony Stark is still not considered to be an Avenger. The audacity.

[ONE YEAR LATER]

Striding out in his black get up was none other that Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and he was desperate. There weren't many emotions that passed through Fury's facade of a mask, his poker face was good. That's just something that he learnt over time whilst working at S.H.I.E.L.D. and had perfected once becoming the Director. No, this time he was desperate. In slight mania as he sped walked his way into the S.H.I.E.L.D. Laboratory.

There was an urgent message delivered to him about a recent piece of energy the facility was working on. An alien device called the Tesseract. After having months of trying to find new ways in order to try and understand this blue, glowing cube, it had finally stirred up some energy. Fury didn't know if he was relieved at the fact that this dormant element was now active, or if he needed to worry.

It was never a good idea to fiddle with things you just don't understand. But this was a risk that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been willing to take, something that they had tried to study for decades now. By fiddling around with the Tesseract, he didn't know if he was committing a great deal of consequences yet to come. But if there was one thing that Fury knew, he had some of the best people working on it.

Fury was accompanied by his second agent, Mara Hill. Both caught up to Agent Phil Coulson, who was standing right outside the facility and waiting. "How bad is it?" Fury questioned.

"That's the problem, sir. We don't know," Coulson replied. All three walked into the elevators with Coulson pushing the levels down to the basement. The elevator rushed down, going fast. "Doctor Selvig read an-" they all left the elevator walking into the giant Labs- "energy surge from the Tesseract four hours ago."

Fury looked over at the giant circular machine reading the Tesseract's energy signature. The man furrowed his brows, "NASA didn't authorise Selvig the go ahead for Test B."

"He wasn't testing it," Coulson defended. "He wasn't even in the room. Spontaneous event," the man concluded.

"It just turned itself on?" Maria voiced out Fury's question.

"Where are the energy levels now?" Fury asked.

"Climbing. When Selvig couldn't shut it down we ordered evac."

Fury nodded, "how long to get everyone out?"

"Campus should be clear in the next half hour."

Fury moved forward," do better." Both Maria and Fury continue to walk towards the Tesseract whilst Coulson turned away and handled the agents and scientists that were trying to evacuate in a safe way. They went through a clear elevator that descended even further in the heart of the Labs, getting to the Tesseract.

"Sir," Maria started. "The evacuation may be futile."

"Should we tell them to go back to sleep?"

She gave him a steely look, "if we can't control the Tesseract's energy there may not be a minimum safe distance."

Fury looked back at her and clicked his tongue, "I need you to make sure the Phase Two prototypes are shipped out."

"Sir, is that really a priority right now?"
