"I don't like losing..."
The same babbling continued as it had for the last hour, it was the same topic too. But Phipps had other duties of outmost importance to attend, rather than giving his attention to Grey, and the newborn chick he was coping in his hands was one of those duties. A newborn chick needs warmth before anything, he had to sit very still in the moving carriage, the butler was thankful of his gloves which were especially useful to accomplish his task. Once at the place, he would have to set the perfect habitat for the small animal. There was so much to do, but a first-rate butler was always prepared, thus the task should not be difficult. It took a few more minutes before Grey would finally run out of steam to complain, he finally leaned back on the carriage's cushions and stretched his arms, keeping scowl on his face as he looked out the window. Silence was a gift that lasted little to no time, the yellow newborn clucked a few times when the carriage seemed to run over some rocks.
"Why did you bring that, anyway?"
Asked Grey once he seemed to have "emotionally recovered" from his last tantrum, his voice still filled with resentment, but he seemed somewhat exhausted after such an active day at the Phantomhive manor. Anyhow, it seemed he had found something else to be annoyed about. And how could he not? That little, fluffy, and yellow creature was a reminder of the set-up orchestrated by the butler who had "cheated death" as he said himself. Even worse, that creature was a reminder of losing to the Queen's puppy. Again."It's our responsibility to care for it, we were holding the egg."Remarqued Phipps with his calm tone, the current topic was something that he had expected already. Grey's disliking of the one thing that caused them to lose, whether it was a game or not, it was enough reason to Grey for blaming the poor creature that hatched. Now that the anger could not be taken out on the young earl, it had only been a question of time before it was driven to the small chick.
"It was their egg, Phipps. It was a set-up; you should have returned the wretched creature to the butler."
"No."
It was not necessary to use anything other than short answers when it came to Grey, he could carry the whole conversation on his own for hours at a time. More so, because they both knew each other so well already. Sometimes Phipps did not need to even say a single word for Grey to just keep on talking, already knowing what Phipps could possibly be thinking. Grey groaned, annoyed, knowing that the "no" was a definitive answer, there was no way to turn back anyway. Furthermore, given the special liking that Phipps had taken for the creature, it would be out of the question to propose leaving it to die on its own somewhere along the way to the palace."Whatever, but you are going to give it away, will you not?"It was the reasonable thing to do, as the queen's butlers they both had enough to do already. There really was no time to spare babysitting a chick.
"No, we are responsible for it-"
"We? What do you mean "we" are?"
Grey's posture changed again, he sat up and pointed at the creature in Phipps's hands, it was shaking, squawking, and squawking. It was fragile and ugly, in Grey's opinion at least. It was difficult even for him to understand Phipps at times, which made it even harder to comprehend just what was so appealing to him about the creature.
"We were playing too; it was our egg."
There was that tone, that dammed tone. The one that Phipps used only when he was right about something, and he knew he was right. At least one of the two had to be cold headed, but it was still extremely annoying to Grey.
