Richard Cockle had always hated sunny Sydney with its tired, testy tunnels. It was a place where he felt anxious.
He was a brave, cowardly, whiskey drinker with ruddy hands and sloppy elbows. His friends saw him as a vigorous, vast volcano. Once, he had even helped a kindhearted baby cross the road. That's the sort of man he was.
Richard walked over to the window and reflected on his cosy surroundings. The clouds danced like jumping toads.
Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Mavis Gloop. Mavis was a ruthless teacher with spiky hands and squat elbows.
Richard gulped. He was not prepared for Mavis.
