Ravine
I was getting ready to meet with Iris this evening. I looked at myself in the mirror, but only at my eyes for I did not want to see my face. My face was nothing, but one word, "Hideous."
"Mr.Devol, your mother wants to see you in her room." Said Vinny as he walked into my room. I quickly hid my face not wanting him to see me. " I'll be there in just a bit." Vinny bowed and walked out of my room.
I took a sigh of relief and put on my mask making my way to my mother's room. I knocked on the door, and I heard her voice say " Come on in, dear." I walked in seeing her sitting at her chair, gazing at her reflection in the mirror. " Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?" My mother blow herself a kiss in the mirror and quickly walked up to me.
"Where are you going?" My mother asked as she tug on my shirt. " I am going for a walk into the woods mother." I told her looking down at my feet. " Why would you want to go into the disgusting woods, when you can stay her with mother at this beautiful Manor?" She laughed and sat back down at her chair. " Come here, dear." I walked up to my mother, kneeling down next to her. She looked into my eyes and gave me a smile. "let's take this off shall we?"
My mother put both hands on my mask and pulled it off. I tried to put my head down, but she grabbed my chin and made me look at her. " Look at your mother." She demanded. I obeyed and looked at my mother's hazel eyes. " Poor thing. Look at you...nothing but scars." She rubbed her finger along every scar on my face and neck. Every scar that my mother would touch made me want to cry in disgust.
"Only a face a mother would love." She whispered to me with a smile. I made a frown and started to look down at the ground. " Don't frown....or slouch. That's for ugly people." She told me giving me a light tap on my cheek. " You wouldn't have these scars if you only listen to your mother." "Yes, I know." I looked into her eyes and notice that her face got dark. " If you knew...then why do you choose to disobey me!"
She yelled as she pulled on the back my hair. I closed my eyes in fear not wanting to get hit. Then I felt a kiss upon my forehead. "Don't be scared my little Corpse Flower. Mommy is here...just listen and you'll be alright." She told me as she hugged my head. I could do nothing, but to hug her back for I love my mother very much.
"Now look at mother, tell me why you are going into the woods?" She asked letting go of my head. " I am going into the woods to go for a walk like I always do, Mother." I lied not wanting to upset her. " You are not trying to meet with someone are you?" She questioned as she moved closer to my face. "Why would I do that mother...people are scared of me." She moved away from me and made a big smile. " Oh, you are right, dear. So smart." She said tapping my face twice.
"Remember the rules, Ravine. One, don't let anyone touch your mask. Understand?" She said getting up from her chair. " Yes, mother." "Two, don't let anyone see your face." She moved feather into the dark corner were lay a small redbox. " Yes, mother." "Three the most important rule of all...don't ever love anyone other than your mother. Why?" She asked me as she placed a hand on the redbox, her hazel eyes Illuminating from the corner of the room.
"Because no one will ever love me as much as my mother." She laughed and walked up to me cupping my face. " Good boy. Now, stand up." She ordered moving your hands away from my face. She moved close to me tugging on my shirt, so I would move my upper body lower for her to wrap her arms around my neck. " Never let anyone get between us Ravine, I am all you have in this world." She whispered as she hugged me. "Yes, mother." I said back to her.
"Leave. I am busy today. Tell Vinny I am going to take a bath, and I need him in my washroom immediately." She pushed me away and headed me my mask. " Yes, mother." I put my mask on and opened the door. " Oh, and Ravine?" " Yes, mother?" I asked looking back at her. "Mother loves you very much." As she said those words I walked out of her room.
I walked around to find Vinny in the dining hall polishing silverware. "Vinny, my mother would like you in her washroom for her bathe." I told him. He looked up from what he was doing and gave me a frown. "Right now?" He asked. " Yes, right now. My mother said she has a busy day." I answered back to him. " Sure...a busy day." He whispered putting away the silverware.
"How was she today?" Vinny asked coming up to me. "She is in a better mood than last week. Did she get a new painting?" " No, Mrs.Devol got more dresses and expensive jewelry. If it was a painting she would be the happiest person on earth right now." Vinny said crossing his arms. " Still can't find the painting she wants?" I asked. " No, It's been nothing, but bloody torture trying to find anything she wants anymore.
It's more of this and that...soon we won't be able to find anything to make her happy." Vinny put his head down seeming very upset. I rubbed his back trying to comfort him a bit. " How was your visit?" I looked into Vinny's gray eyes and down at my feet. " It was normal...nicer than last time." I told him fidgeting with my hands.
"Good." We were both quite. Enjoying this rare peaceful moment of not having my mother breathing down on our necks. " You must go, before she starts to get upset." Vinny made a frustrating look and began to walk away. " Oh! Mr.Devol?" " Yes?" I said looking back at, Vinny. " I know it's hard with your mother and all, but...your mother loves you very much." I looked back down at the floor and answer with
"Yes, I know."
