Abhi pulled me behind him as we skidded through the darkforest. I wasn’t the most athletically trained  person out there, and at that moment in time I was regretting that quite a bit. Also neither me nor Abhi had had any means of food in the past twenty-four hours and that wasn’t doing my ability to keep up with Abhi any good, my head spun for a few seconds here and there but I supressed the feeling. We were this close to our freedom, this close, I wasn’t going to let my weaknesses surface now.

I must have jinxed that as just then I seemed to have tripped on maybe the biggest twig out there. I fell, and because our hands were intertwined I bought Abhi down with me. There was a searing pain in my ankle as I tried to sit up. Abhi sat up and turned towards me.

“Tumhe bhi yehi time mila tha girne ka?” he asked sarcastically, but then somehow noticed my face contorted in pain, in the dark. “Tum tehk ho?”

“Haan,” I breathe out, but we both know I’m lying. I think I’d broken or fractured my ankle.

“Mein tumhe autale tha hoon, chalo aao.” I shook my head. That would just slow him down.

“Nahi, app jaye, aur phir madat lekar wapis ajana. Agar mein saath mein gayi, tu phir mein apko bus aistha kardongi."

"Foogi, tum pagal hogahi ho? Hum itne kareeb hain aur tum chati hoo ke mein tumhe kisi jungli janvar ka khana bane doon? Daadi mujhe maardalengi!" he rants hotly. I roll my eyes at his overdramatic behaviour.

"Wo goonde toh ane se rahe, aur abhi panch mint pehle ap hi ke rahe teh ke koi jungli janvaar mere paas bhi nahi ayga kyonki ke mein itni bhayankar dihkti hoon." I remark pointedly. The pain seemed to be increasing.

"Nahi, Foogi, meine bohot sunlee hain tumhari baatein-" his hand hard travelled to my injured leg, and he seemed to realise why I was refusing to move. As well as twisting my ankle I had somehow managed to get a massive cut along the bottom of my leg, and it was bleeding heavily. Abhi's eyes instantly laced with worry. He moved the leaves and twigs out of the way to get a better look. Unfortunately in the dark all he could see was dark red blood seething through a gash in my leggings. The dizziness returned, I shook my head to rid of it. "Main tumhe yaha par chor ke nahi jaanewala, abhi patanahi kitni der lage ghi madat dhoond ne mein. Wo road toh dehk gayi, par pichle ghente se hum waha par ponchne ki kosish karahe hein. Aur meine wahan se pichle ghente se ek gaari gozarte hoeh dehki hai." Abhi sighs. Then looks up into my eyes. Then slowly he puts his arms under the crook of my neck and my legs, carful to not cause any extra pain, but just moving did cause pain. I tried not to make a sound but a hiss slipped through my lips without permission. This made Abhi look at me again, with an unknown expression in his eyes.

"Sorry." he mutters like a little kid.

"Apke moo seh esi baatein achi nahi lagti..." this made him crack a smile. He put me down again, this time resting against a massive tree. Instead of sitting down next to me, Abhi gets up. "Kaha jarahe hai ap?"

"Tumhare liye paani lene. Mere khyaal se yaha par kahi par ek koowa (well) hai. Meine ate waqt dehka tha. Aas paas hi hai, tu main panch dus mint tak wapis ajaonga."

"Good idea, phir oske baad mein try karoongi chalne ke liye, ab dard kam hai."

"Oye Ms Clever, sooch na bhi nahi. Agar koi infection wection hogaya, ya toot woot gayi na taang, to tum nahi, mein maroonga. Aur agar mujhe daadi ne mardiya, toh mein wapis akar tumhe mardaloonga, samjhi?" I smile, but his joking behaviour turns serious. "Hum aaj raath yahi par rehlete hai. Kaal sobha tak intezaar karsakte hai."

"Par-" Abhi gave me a warning look.

"Dus mint." he says again and then walks off. All of a sudden I felt so alone. And everything that had happened over the past few days almost made me break down. Then my thoughts travelled to Bulbul and Ma, and Daadi. They'd all be so worried. And I could do nothing to lessen any of their pains. I felt so helpless, and even more so now that I couldn't even walk. I felt anger chorus through my veins. Why did I have to be so helpless? Why didn't I escape when I had the chance, that way neither Abhi or I would be stuck in the forest. And Abhi, he hasn't eaten for as long as me, he's out there now getting water where he could easily escape. He could be free. But I'm holding him back.

Just then I hear the leaves behind the tree crackle. "Ap itni jaldi agaye?" I ask, instead of receiving an answer I hear grunts.

I try turning to see whether Abhi was hurt, but instead see the corporatar and his men, smiling maliciously. The corporator makes his way in from of me, and holds up his gun. Before I can say anything or do anything he speaks up.

"Mere haath ab nahi kamp ne wale Pragya ji." With that a gunshot goes off, and pain erupts in my abdomen. "Chalo, ab os Abhi ko dhoondo! Jaaldi!" he screams and jogs off. I wanted to warn Abhi, but I had no strength left. My head lulled sideways, due to lack of energy.

In the distance I heard Abhi's voice. "Foogi! Foogi!" My eyes drooped, and I felt two hands shake me, causing more pain. "Foogi! Foogi otoh. Pragya?!"

With that, darkness engulfed me.
