Being Honest

If someone could pinch you right now, it certainly wouldn't be enough to get you to fully believe what had just happened that night, an hour after the cadets were excused from brief military graduation under the supervision of Shadis and other commanders of many platoons of youth scattered across the kingdom. It didn't feel real, it was almost a lie.

Your mind recalled the scene that had left you so far in pure surprise and confusion, as if you were experiencing it again for a brief moment.

"Give your hearts!" these were the words that caused the crowd of cadets to place their fists in front of the heart area with a single guerrilla howl, all facing their superiors who carefully assessed each one.

You were positioned in the front row, with Eren on your left alongside Armin, while Mikasa and Sasha were on the right, with Krista and Ymir in the back row. All of your acquaintances were there close to you, with focused faces, committed to taking on the overwhelming responsibility that would come from then on.

The pride of just getting there was gigantic for you, taking another step towards your vast goals, especially when you turned your attention to Mikasa in the sidelines.

She kept looking straight ahead, but she knew perfectly well that your (E/C) eyes were fixed on her discreetly, but holding back so as not to break her professional posture in front of people as important and judgmental as the commanders.

In the background, you saw Sasha as dying to get something to eat, since she had planned to bring a baked potato she found in the cafeteria to savor and pass the time in the middle of that extensive occasion.

But, knowing how Shadis would react the second time around that same infraction, you made sure to steal the potato and hide it, preventing her from breaking the rules and getting punished in such a crucial event like that.

Returning with your attention now entirely fixed on your superiors, you found yourself ignoring a certain part of their speech, specifically the one where positions were cited. Everyone already knew what they would be, the Garrison, the Military Police, and, obviously, the Exploration Troop.

You gulped as they moved on to the next phase of the speech, where finally the ranking of placing the cadets with the best scores would be set.

"Those whose names are called, step forward! Mikasa Ackerman!" a great happiness filled your thoughts as you avoided a big smile when seeing that the girl had been ranked first, nothing fairer for someone who worked so hard to be ready for anything.

Mikasa didn't show any reaction, but took a step forward, creating a new line in front of yours.

"(Y/N) (L/N)!"

Hearing your own name, the world seemed to stop around you, widening your (E/C) eyes and briefly raising the strands of your long (H/C) hair, staring in pure disbelief at the advertiser instructor until you figured that it was not a joke. You were second among the best of the best, you were close to the top.

You couldn't contain a shaky corner smile as you took a step forward, being right next to Mikasa, whose gray eyes finally swung toward you as they sent a silent message that you managed to decipher without having to overhear explicitly. She was proud of you, so much so that you could feel her controlled urge to want to congratulate you in a much closer way so to speak, but avoiding it for now.

You nodded at her lightly, blushing hard to the point where your cheeks were completely red, staring at the ground with a huge internal euphoria as you felt yourself returning to being that accomplished child at the end of each practice in the fields and feeling stronger. The difference, however, was that you now had more than your own self-recognition of how good you were, as well as other people's.
