Back then, I knew Nicole wouldn't give up, now she knew something was different about me. I saw how she planned to do it...Even now, so many years on, I can't believe she did this, betrayed me, ruined my life. But that's the past now, even thoughit still hurts thinking about it,I have the rest of my life to get over it. That's how long I have been sentenced here. Forever. I will die here. Rot away here. I don't have much, but I realise now, afterso manyyears, that I am lucky to be alive. I could have been burned on the stake, not fed or just beaten and humiliated in a stock. However, I was sent here in a dark cell that was scary at first, but my eyes have adjusted to the light now. I have a small straw bed in the corner that I need to curl into a little ball to fit, and a raggy type blanket to keep me warm. Also, as far away from my 'bed' as I could get it is a small chamber pot. It gets full easily and sometimes overflows, yet I have learned to live with that too. Unlike some of the other people in this place, I have a roomier cell. This is because I am in the 'Lost Causes' section of the house. I have no chance of getting out. Unlike some of the people in this place, I can never leave. They can. They never had to hide, unlike me. They weren't humiliated like I was.
*Flashback*
"C'mon Mary, we need to get out of here" Tommy was standing in a highly wooded area, tugging on Mary's hand. Her eyes had glazed over like she wasn't there, like she was watching something else. Her posture was rigid, like a plank of wood. Suddenly, Mary gasped. In her mind, she saw the worst possible conclusion. Nicole had gone to the Mayor. She was reporting her for Witchcraftery, a very serious accusation. She is on her way now.
"NO!" Mary cried, causing Tommy to jump at this sudden outburst.
"Uh... It's kinda important Mary..." Tommy mumbled, trying, once again to tug her. This time she didn't argue, but fell over at his feet.
"Why me? Why?" She whimpered quietly, pulling her knees up to her chin. Her hair was limp at her side, soaked due to the storm that was brewing. A rustling in the leaves not far from them made Mary jump up in one, fluid movement. Grabbing even tighter on Tommy's hand, she sprinted away, dragging him this time.
"Are you ok? Mary? You seem kinda keyed up," Tommy asked in a generally worried tone.
"They will kill me, I have to hide. Nicole..." Mary cut off, a few more stray tears leaked down her face.
"Nicole? What has she got to do with it? She means nothing," Tommy attempted to comfort her,
"She...She W W Went to the Mayor... I have to hide, I can't disgrace my family like this..."
Mary ran faster and Tommy struggled to keep up, he stumbled on tree roots but kept standing.
"How do you know this? It isn't possible... Are you.... A... a..." He struggled to get the word out, stuttering uncontollably. There were tears threatining to leak out of his eyes too.
"Just say it." Mary snapped, angrily. Tommy ripped his hand away from hers, and skidded to a stop. "Look I'm sorry Tom, but I think everyone is gonna come to that conclusion and no doubt you will join them too." Mary concluded, her tone a little softer this time. Once again, she went rigid. Nicole was there. She wasn't going to be sentenced to death. It was worse. The Mayor had made his decision. She was being sent to the Asylum. Forever.
