"Lacey, honey, wake up." My mum shakes my shoulder and I shiver and burrow deeper into my warm, thick comforter.

"Five more minutes-" I start to say, but she interrupts me again.

"Honey, it's important. I need to tell you something and then you can go back to sleep, alright?"

I slowly come out from under the covers, and I am blinded by the lamp next to my bed.

"Grandad is ill. He's in the hospital and the doctors aren't sure he'll make it this time." She says, wiping her eyes. "I have to go to Orlando to stay with him, if this really is it...and I'm leaving now. Your brother Liam is here in the next bedroom over, he'll be staying with you while I'm gone. Listen to him, he knows what he's doing." She whispers, sitting on the bed, next to me.

"But mum, I don't need a babysitter I'm-"

"Lacey, you've only just turned sixteen and you need someone to look after you. Please don't argue with me." She pleads. I can see so much pain and exhaustion in her eyes, I give in.
We say our goodbyes and then she turns off my lamp and closes the door. I quickly drift off to sleep, smiling while thinking about mum not being here to wake me up at 9:30.
