Niklaus Mikaelson was overly infatuated with a woman during the American Revolution. She was regal and he was curious. She had long blonde hair that she chose to braid every morning. She would count her steps and would never step on cracks. Klaus didn’t know why he was infatuated with her. She seemed entirely insane from a spectator’s point of view. She was always friendly. She did not take kindly to people treating their peers with disdain. She stood up for what she believed in. Her father, while a wealthy man, did not support the British troops. He thought that a separation was needed, anyway. Dorcus, that was her name, thought that the only reason her father was so avid for the fight was so he could continue to smuggle whatever trade he wanted. That was how that had accumulated their small fortune in the first place. Essentially, her father was a thief. She didn’t necessarily agree with his methods of income, but she was not about to argue with the man. After all, he could just beat her until she agreed.

One of the reasons that Niklaus was so attached to this girl was because she did not know that he was a vampire. She was kind to him from the beginning, just because that was the type of person she was. Her brother muttered under his breath when she invited him into their home. She said that her brother needed more friends, and left him with a wink. Niklaus and Isaac, the brother, started off by talking about the war. Then that lead to literature. Klaus was pleasantly surprised at the gentleman before him. They continued to talk about books until Dorcus arrived again. She stole Klaus’s attention from the world around him with all of her eccentricities. She almost glowed. Her brother smirked at Klaus and shook his head. “You are welcome back anytime, friend.” Isaac promised before he stalked off to go about his business. Dorcus smiled at her brother’s kind words and asked if Niklaus would like to take a walk with her.

Their relationship was not perfect. She would often get lost in daydreams and Klaus would be too close to the real world. He would make her grounded. He would bring her down from the clouds. Dorcus, most of the time, was appreciative of his wanting her to be prepared. She did, however, feel like he wanted her to fail on occasion. He was setting her up to make mistakes that she didn’t want to make. Mistakes that would affect them both.

When Dory learned what Klaus was, she reacted better than he thought she would. He was standing in front of a lifeless man, and down a few hundred feet stood the woman that he was to be betrothed to. She had wide eyes and concern on every detail of her face. She looked from the man to Klaus before she spoke.

“What did this man do to you?” And Niklaus just laughed. His laugh was humorless and filled with nothing but air and sorrow. Dory didn’t know what that meant, so she shook her head and asked him again. He narrowed his eyes at her, but she didn’t seem phased. She looked at him expectantly.

“I-I had this urge,” he began. He realized he was going to tell her the truth. That shocked him the most. “This urge to drink his blood.” Her eyes widened, but she stood her ground. “Love, I am a monster. I do not expect you to think otherwise. I just hope-” He stopped. What did he hope for? “I hope you understand that I cannot help what I am. I did not choose to be this monster.” She crossed her arms.

“What monster are you, exactly? Are you a demon?” Her eyes narrowed. She was shooting daggers at him. Her look could have killed even the most immortal, Klaus determined.

“No, no. I believe I am worse. I’m a hybrid.” He told her. She didn’t understand, but he explained it to her and she nodded. She looked down at her feet. “Well love?” He asked expectantly. “What are you thinking?”

“You cannot tell anyone in my family, Niklaus. They would not believe you, and even if they did, they would try to kill you.” He smirked.

“They couldn’t if they tried.”
