A couple of days later, days full of training and death stares from Yamaguchi, you were hopping on a bus to go to Aoba Johsai for a practice match. In those days, you had received your official volleyball club jacket, and you were very much in love. It was heading into summer, but the rest of the team were wearing their jackets as well, so at least you weren't the odd one out. Hinata had thrown up all over Tanaka's lap, before running to the bathroom, it was practically a tradition now. Kageyama was very mad about this fact, and you had to help Suga and Tanaka hold him back from beating Hinata up. You were secretly happy you had chosen to sit next to Kei instead, mainly because you did not want to be vomited on ever again, once was traumatizing enough, thank you.You were walking to the gym with Tanaka, Kageyama, Kei and Yamaguchi, when you heard some of the players from Aoba Johsai talking about Tanaka. You mentally face palmed when he started intimidating the players, before noticing one of them was Kageyama's old teammate. You had learnt the story about his nickname from both Hinata and Kei, and even parts of it from Kageyama himself, so you really hated that boy. Walking out from behind Kei, you grabbed Kageyama's arm to pull him down so you could whisper in his ear. "Hey, you looked really tense, are you ok? We can leave before you speak to them if you want." He shook his head slightly, but when you went to pull your arm away he tensed again so you left it there, hoping it was comforting to him.Tanaka continued trying to intimidate them, and then Kei joined in, always desperate to provoke people when possible. Daichi came around the corner, looking furious, and you stayed perfectly still beside Kageyama, trying to not incur the captain's wrath. You and your teammates were leaving when the onion head spoke to Kageyama, making him tense up in your hand. "Long time no see, King. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of dictatorship you're running." Tanaka looked ready to commit murder, and you were trying to think of a sarcastic retort, when Kageyama just looked up and agreed. No fighting, no anger, just 'Yeah.' It was pretty impressive, and very mature, but you quickly decided being mature was for losers and stuck the finger at them as you gave them a death glare over your shoulder.Tanaka slapped Kageyama on the shoulder and you let go of his arm, only for Kei to smack you in the back of the head."What the hell Kei??? That really hurt!""I saw you give them the finger, not to mention clinging on Kageyama's arm like that. It's kind of gross if you ask me. Being all protective of the king." You felt your face redden, glad that Kei wasn't speaking loudly and no one was near enough to hear it. "Just because your heart only has the capacity to care about 5 people at a time, doesn't mean mine does. He hasn't done anything to you, he just doesn't know how to communicate at all. Not to mention, if I befriend him, that bitch Sato would be pissed because she thinks he's so hot. How is she in college prep? She spends every lesson talking about how hot people are. Which is very entertaining honestly, except that she tries to cheat off my work. Just get smarter if you want good grades." What had started with reasons why Kageyama was precious and should be left alone had turned into reasons why Sato was not precious and you wish she would leave you alone. Oh well. You had tried to get the message across. Kei had sniggered at your comments about Sato, specifically the just get smarter one. Regardless, he seemed to have dropped the topic as you walked into the gym with the rest of the team, bowing and thanking them for the game. There were a lot more than one team worth of players in this gym, and you wondered why most of them bothered to turn up to a club they'd never get to play an actual game for. Tanaka managed to scare Hinata again, so he was quickly sent off to look for him. While he did that, the rest of you warmed up, specifically trying to warm up your receives. This was only your second proper game, and you were playing the position that created the foundation for every attack. It was a lot of pressure, but when you compared it to the pressure you used to feel as goalie, or centre defense, it really wasn't that bad. Tanaka and Hinata came back, and after Kiyoko tried to offer him a few words of encouragement, he exploded. It was a bit unfortunate for your middle school friend to die so abruptly but you had a game to focus on.Hinata was a complete mess, running into the other players, and even into the referee box, which was a bit unfortunate. You and Daichi both tried to get him to calm down, but nothing seemed to be working. Finally, you were swapped out, and Hinata was up to serve, the current score being 15-24 in Aoba Johsai's favour. He looked absolutely panicked, and when the whistle blew he threw it up, startled, before slamming it... right into the back of Kageyama's head. The whistle was blown, declaring Aoba Johsai the winner of the first set. Kageyama approached Hinata, with an aura of absolute murder, but suprisingly, at the end of their encounter, no one was dead, or even bleeding. And Hinata looked calmer than he had all day. Regardless of that, it had been a strong serve, right to the back of Kageyama's head, and you were concerned he was actually injured and just refusing to admit it so he could continue playing. "Kageyama-san. Come here. I want to see if your head is okay." He looked puzzled, but nonetheless came to stand in front of you, and you pushed on his shoulders until the back of his head was level with your eyes. Quickly realizing you had absolutely no idea what you were doing, you called for Kiyoko, who after some careful prodding, said it would be fine, but it would definitely bruise. At the start of the second set, the onion head from the other team asked Hinata to teach him how to do a back of the head serve, and then Kei asked to be taught as well."Kei, shut up, stop being rude about your teammates. Onion head, where's the sportsmanship? Stop trying to intimidate Shoyo. And Shoyo, calm down, you can do this." They began the game with Ennoshita serving, which the other team quickly scored off. They served, and you received, even though it was slightly off. They attempted a quick attack, but missed, and then Kageyama apologized to Hinata. You wiped a fake tear from your eye, so proud that 'your little boy was learning some manners!'Many points later, Kei scored a point and you cheered before he decided to be a dickwad like every other moment in his life."Your tosses are so precise, it makes me sick." "Stop being an arsehole to Kageyama! He didn't do anything to you!""Stop simping over the king and maybe I'll be nicer." You scowled, fully ready to fight Kei, before Daichi grabbed you both and told you to get back to the game. Kageyama looked at you in confusion, mouthing 'simping' questioningly. You looked down, knowing your face was exploding in colour. The game continued, with your team managing to take the second set. As you were on your drink break, the gym exploded in high pitch squeals, and you winced in agony. The cause for these squeals was soon revealed to be a tall boy with fluffy light brown hair. He was extremely attractive."No! [L/N]-san not you too!" Tanaka looked at you pleadingly, and you looked around in confusion. Kei was snickering, and the rest of the team looked rather bored. Except Kageyama. He looked extremely irritated, as though someone had just stepped on his milk carton. You finally pieced together the fact you had called your opposition attractive out loud, and you groaned, burying your face in your hands."He's an extremely good setter. But he has a really bad personality. Like Tsukishima bad." "Kei's personality isn't nearly as awful as everyone thinks. He's far less intimidating when you know about his stash of dino-" Kei had put his hand over your mouth, and you were highly tempted to lick it, just to get a reaction. When he cautiously moved his hand away several seconds later, you stayed silent, well aware he had just as much blackmail material on you. The setter, who Kageyama had called Oikawa Tooru, was staring at your team with interest."Yoohoo, Long time no see, Tobio-chan! You've really grown." You relaxed at his words, he seemed pretty nice. "Having fun being the king?" And there was the bad personality Kageyama had mentioned. Why were the pretty ones always arseholes?Kageyama turned to the team, ignoring Oikawa completely. "He's extremely good. I learned how to serve and block by watching him." You didn't miss the way Kageyama had phrased it, implying that Oikawa hadn't actually taught him anything. Kei seemed to have understood as well, and Yamaguchi had a look of understanding on his face. Oikawa was sent to warm-up, with lots of cheering coming from the stands. You managed to get to match point against Aoba Johsai, and Oikawa still hadn't been subbed in. Oikawa walked up to the bench, and was immediately subbed in... as the server. He pointed straight at you, before slamming his serve right at your arms. It rebounded, completely uncontrolled and you could still feel the imprint of the ball on your arms. You had received some strong serves and spikes before, but nothing was comparable to the power behind that hit."I just started watching, but the libero, you're in your first year aren't you? You're not very good at controlling the ball. Neither are number 5 or number 6 actually." You glared at him, mad that he was right. You had never tried to receive something that hard, so it wasn't exactly surprising you had failed, but you felt it sting in your chest nonetheless. He targeted another recieve straight at you, and while the angle was better, it still wasn't close enough for Kageyama to get to."Sorry Kageyama-san! I'll try and get the next one guys!" Hinata looked over at you, before he started waving his arms around like a headless chicken, trying to get Oikawa's attention."Hey, Great King! Aim for me! I can take it! Target me!" "Shoyo, I appreciate the support, but shut up. He's not any better than Kageyama, I got this." You smirked over at the other team, having said it loud enough for everyone to hear it, including Oikawa. You knew he was going to aim his next serve at you as well, after that insult to his honour, how could he not? Kageyama looked slightly stunned and was turning red, and you could hear Kei's hand slapping against his own face. Daichi made you move to the edge, and you did, even though there was no way the serve wasn't going to be aimed at you. Oikawa served once again, but thankfully the pinpoint accuracy had slowed it down enough for you to receive. Unfortunately, it was their chance ball, which Oikawa was quick to point out. Hinata got a one touch on it, and Kageyama set it to the other side of the net, where Hinata smashed it right past Oikawa's face. The ref blew the whistle, and you had managed to win a game against a top 4 team. Hinata jumped onto you, and you grabbed Kageyama to drag him into your celebration. You heard Kei call you a simp from the sidelines, but you were too happy to care. After some feedback from Takeda-sensei, you headed to the bathrooms with Hinata. You smacked him on the head when you heard voices near the sinks, and he quickly stopped singing about having to pee, which you were thankful for. You both peered around the corner, seeing Kageyama and the onion head in a heated discussion. You pulled Hinata back, and waited for them to finish talking before you entered."The next time we face off, we'll beat you once again." No more words came after that, and you heard footsteps coming towards you and Hinata. You quickly walked into the bathroom, giving Kageyama a smile and punching him on the shoulder as you walked past. Two Aoba Johsai players were standing there, clearly talking about Kageyama, but you ignored it in favour of going to use the toilet. Once you came out, they were still standing there so you washed your hands before deciding to be the mature one."Good game. You both played well." They nodded at you, looking surprised and you quickly walked out, trying to catch up with the rest of your team.
