I shifted uncomfortably when I sat in the chair next to Christian, when I noticed he grabbed his champagne, I made my move.
“I’m not allowed to be visibly seen talking to you, so I’ll have to make this short,” I whispered. I specifically made sure to not face him, but instead I leaned back so my voice could reach only him, while I looked at Will who apparently had arrived in my absence. I tried my best to look seriously engaged in some story Adri was telling about her mother when I started again. “I don’t know what you’re intentions are with her, but I know about your reputation and-” I was about to continue but Christian caught my lead, leaned back and didn’t face me as well when he talked so lowly only I could hear.
“Your source on my reputation is a very horrible one who feeds you lies to hate me. So I suggest you hold back whatever nonsense you want to yell at me about. Don’t think you’re the only one who’s displeased with our having to tolerate the other” I saw him smile, and I tried to hold back my hatred for him as well as my twitching hand next to me that wanted to slap him.
“You are-” I turned to him and was about to rip his head off verbally and physically when Cassie stopped me.
“Getting along, I hope?” She whispered sweetly as she held Christians hand in hers and looked up into my eyes like an adorable lamb. Her curly, golden blonde locks falling on both sides of her soft face.
“Of course,” we both quickly replied as my hand jumped onto the stem of the champagne glass in front of me and I began to gulp the sweet juice.
As I bit my tongue I imaginde all the different and wonderful ways the situation could’ve ended had Cassie not interrupted.
I could’ve punched him in the face, kicked him in the shin…. Or better yet right in the bal-
“I got it guys!” Max’s elated voice brought me out of my wonderful daydream, or nightdream since it was night…. Or whatever, and I looked up at him standing across from me, behind Max’s chair. “I got the promotion!” He smiled widely and walked over to me quickly with the proudest look I had ever seen him possess. When he got to me, he lifted me up from my chair to give me a large hug. A few people looked over at our table, but Max spoke low enough to prevent everyone in the room from staring.
“Congratulations!” I almost yelled, so proud of him and my father for not letting me down. “I’m not surprised because I know you deserved it, but-” I laughed as he pulled me away and gave me a big kiss on the lips. “I love you so much.” He whispered when he pulled away.
I looked at him with all the love that my heart could possess as his sweet joy was infectious and I felt so wonderful for him.
“Tonight,” he paused as he leaned down, without letting his arm drop from its strong grasp on my waist, and picked up a champagne glass. “We celebrate!” He almost yelled as he raised up the champagne so suddenly that some of it fell out.
We all, meaning Adriana, William, Cassandra, and myself, cheered. Christian was neither cheering, nor part of us, yet.
The thought that “yet” would come one day, scared me.
“Hello, everyone!” All our eyes turned to the stage when a loud voice appeared on the microphone.
“Of course my mom has to come in and ruin our moment.” I heard Adriana say, and I gave her a disapproving look. I hated it when Adri bashed her mom, but I was too happy to care at this point.
