"Good afternoon students, may I have all your attention please?"
My friends and I sprang up off the green, freshly cut grass to listen carefully to what the principal was saying. It was a really cloudy day and it seemed like at any moment, the rain would come pouring down on us.
It was a Thursday, and the day before, The Ministry of Health announced that the first case of the Corona virus found it's way to Jamaica. It was debated if schools should close down or stay open . This was the day we will find out, this was the day we would see each other for the very last time for 9 months.
As we sprang up, we looked at each other, with seriousness in our eyes, waiting to hear the big news. Layla and I held hands ever so tightly while Daniel and Sarah stared at each other with arrogant looks in their eyes, signaling to each other to be quiet.
"As of today, schools are going to be closed for 14 days."
I could hear some students cheering along, happier than baby finally getting what they wanted, but I had mixed feelings about it. I was happy that we could get a break from this hell that we call a "school" and I was extremely sad because I knew that I didn't like staying home and I'll not get to see my friends anymore. That's what makes school fun, right?
Layla, Daniel and Sarah danced in delight, as I kept yelling no, no, no over and over again. I did not want school to be closed. I did not want to distant myself from them. I then burst into tears, while layla joined in with me.
"It's only going to be 2 weeks, it's not that long." Layla said, while comforting me.
"No, what if they decide not to open school?
"They are not going to close school longer than that so stop the worrying. "
"Kemoya, what are you crying for? You must be really glad that we are getting a break from school" Sarah said while hissing.
For about 5 minutes, we all stood there talking and giving each other valuables of our own to keep while being away from each
Friday is finally here, two more days until school re-opens, I thought to myself. I sat on my sofa and turned the television on.
"The Ministry of Health reported earlier that schools are to stay closed as there are more reported cases of the novel Corona Virus."
"What the hell?"
" ughhh"I slid down off the sofa and started to cry on the floor. When am I going to see my friends? When am I going back to school?
