The landscapes flowed out at an unsettling pace. "Gunners at your stations" Sturmhond called out. "Squallers, hold steady". "Sturmhond, I'm going to kill you!" Alina shouted, "I'd be happy to oblige but you'll have to wait till we land". "And y/n, please dont hate me after this".

In the next moment you entered darkness. It wasn't like the night sky, there was complete nothingness. You were in the fold. As soon as you entered the unsea, Alina threw up her hands and casted a wide golden swath of sunlight around the hummingbird.

You had your head in your knees and your arms wrapped around them. Something felt off about the fold, something different. It felt like the darkness had a texture, as if you could feel it across your skin. Alinas wound began to pull and itch, as if the flesh was alive. "They're coming" said Mal, "listen".

Over the wind you could hear the cries, and the beating of Volcra wings. Alina spread her arms wider, letting the light bloom brighter and drive them back. "No" said Sturmhond. "Bring them closer".

"What? Why?" Alina asked, "they hunt us" he said. "Maybe its time we hunted them". A whopping cry went up from the crew, followed by barks of madness. "Pull back the light" said Sturmhond.

"He's out of his mind" Alina said to Mal, "tell him he's out of his mind". "Well. . ." "Well what?" she asked, "in case you've forgotten, one of those things tried to eat you!". Mal shrugged and a grin was plastered on his face. "Maybe thats why I'd like to see what those guns can do".

"Just for a moment" said Sturmhond, "indulge me". "Alina. .please don't" you said, holding her gaze. Alina sucked in a breath. "I'm sorry" she said, "Sturmhond, if we die it's on you".

Alina curled her fingers. The circle of light retracted, shrinking just around the ship. "All the way!" commanded Sturmhond, "Sturmhond" you said locking eyes with him.

Alina let the light fade all the way and the darkness overtook. The rustle of wings grew louder and the Volcra dove. "Now Alina!" Sturmhond shouted, "throw it wide!".

Alina cast out a wave of sunlight. It illuminated the horror surrounding the ship. There were volcra everywhere. "Fire!" Sturmhond cried. Tolya and Tamar opened fire. The sound was like a relentless skull, shattering thunder through the air. The Volcra plummeted from the sky, chests blown open.

The sound kept on and the volcra didnt understand. They writhed and flew in panic through the fold. Finally, the quiet came. "Do you think we can draw another flock?" one of he squallers asked, "maybe, but we should head east.

It's almost dawn and I dont wanna be spotted" said Sturmhond. "There are more of them" said Mal, " a lot more". "How do you know?" Sturmhond asked. "I just do".

"Where?", "a little north". The Hummingbird dipped its wings and turned as Mal called out orders. "Sturmhond, I'm gonna kill you" you said, "you love me too much" he smirked. The hummingbird dipped starboard and the screams began. "Saints" you and Mal cursed.

He raised his rifle. The volcra stringed beneath the skiffs hull, their backs to you. But what they wwe trying to shield and protect sent a wave of nausea through you. You'd uncovered a nest.

The crew had gone silent. The barking and howling had all died. Sturmhond brought the ship in another low arc. Then he shouted, "Tolya, Tamar, grentaki". The twins rolled out two cast iron shells and lifted them to the edge of the rail. "Squallers, on my signal" Sturmhond said. "Fuses!" he shouted, then "gunners, drop heavy!".

The instant the shells were released, Sturmhond roared, "now!". The squallers threw up their arms, and the hummingbird shot skyward. A second past and a massive boom sounded below you.

Suddenly Alina felt nauseous. Her mind went blank and her efforts to keep the light faded. The ship was plunged into darkness. Her light was gone. "Alina!" Mal shouted. The scuffling of boots sounded through the air. A wail was heard and the volcras cries echoed. You pulled yourself up from your seat and raised your hands.

Massive streams of water formed. You threw your arms forward and the water bolted out into the darkness. You heard it collide with a volcra as it let out a shriek. You summoned more water but this time formed them into giant icicles. You spun around and launched them all out into the darkness once more. You heard more volcra shriek as they were impaled.

Alina threw the light back up once more. You still had your hands raised and the summoned water floating around you. One of the squallers lay bleeding on the deck, his arm nearly torn from its socket.

The sail above flapped uselessly. The ship titled, listing hard to the starboard. "Tamar, help him!" Sturmhond ordered. But tolya and Tamar were already on their way to him. The other squaller had both her hands raised, her face rigid with the strain as she tried to summon a strong enough current.

The ship wobbled and it wavered. Sturmhond held fast to the wheel, yelling orders to the crewmen working the sails. "Are you alright?" Mal asked, "are you hurt?". Alina couldnt look up from the floor, her whole body was shaking so much she might fly apart. "Is she injured?" Sturmhond asked, "Just get us out of here!" Mal replied.

"Oh is that what I should be trying to do" Sturmhond barked back, "Sturmhond, get us out of here!" you shouted at him. His expression went soft and he quickly went back to the wheel.

The ship rocked and it swayed. Alina looked down to see the gray sands rushing up to meet the hull. And suddenly, you were out of the fold. The ground was too close to the ship as it should have been. "light s out!" shouted Sturmhond. Alina dropped her hands, and desperately grabbed onto the cockpits rai. "Just a little farther!" cired Sturmhond.

The squaller let out a sob as she tried her best efforts to keep up the hummingbird. The sails dipped and the hummingbird continued to fall. Branches and trees scraped the hullas you lowered from the air.

"Everyone get low and hold on tight!" shouted Sturmhond. Mal and Alina hunkered down into the cockpit, arms and legs braced together, hands clasped.

"We're not going to make it" said Alina, but Mal didn't answer. He only squeezed her hand tighter. At the last second Sturmhond jumped in. "This is cozy" he said. "Where's y/n?" he asked before you struck the ground.

You were still on the deck of the ship but you stood at the front. You quickly raised your hands and summoned the water from the large lake just up ahead. The ship skid across the land but when the water hit, it slammed into the ship and floated across.

The impact of hitting the ground, destroyed most of the hull. The water managed to stop any further damage.

The ship came to a stop and floated on the surface of the water. You dropped your hands and the water fell back into the lake. Your face was glowing and your eyes blazed with power. Water was flooding into the cockpits floor. Mal?" Alina ventured, "I'm okay" he replied.

Alina peered around but Sturmhond was nowhere to be found. Alina and Mal climbed out of the cockpit, the broken ship began to tilt alarmingly. With a creak, one of the masts gave way, collapsing into the lake.
