A half hour had passed since we arrived, Roma and I sat cuddling on her pink sheets watching Disney movies. One movie ended and another began; the volume raised to 100. We could still hear the screams, shouts and smashing of everything. We were watching Cinderella, she had just arrived at the ball and I stopped the movie.

"You are a fool for coming back, you gay faggot!" I heard his dad shout.

"It wasn't my decision." John cried. "Rocky brought me here,"

"That fag?" He shouted. "That gay faggot that poisoned your good christian mind?"

"I didn't realise that we were christians, you're an alcoholic-wife-beating-homophobic," I heard John yell.

I picked Roma up in my arms.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"I'm taking you home," I said. "My home. It's safe there."

I needed to get her out of here- I was sure I had some old board games and we certainly had kids TV shows to watch.

"You wouldn't hit me," John screamed. "You wouldn't put my blood on that. You know it's expensive,"

I grabbed Roma's thick mobile phone and I ran out her room sneaking out of the brown door into the street and I paused. Do I go left or right- my mind was messed up. I chose right and walked quickly, almost running.

The woods were next. I knew Roma hated the woods but it was the best way to go. She buried her head in the crook of my neck- the way John did- and slowly sobbed. I ran in a zig-zag shape and I saw the light and ran straight toward it. It got closer and closer until I was back in the light of day. I saw my house and my mum's car was just parking into the driveway. I carried Roma into the sitting room and my mum sat facing her friend, Samantha, drinking coffee and eating biscuits.

"Hey, sweetie," she said. "Is John there, too?"

"Hey," I said slowly. "No he's at his house. I had to get Roma out of there,"

"Hey, Rocks," Samantha spoke up. "How're things?"

"Well, could be better; could be worse," I replied.

I think Roma fell asleep in my arms as she didn't move as much and the sobbing had stopped. I sorted her in my arms and took her up to my room and placed her softly on the bed. I kissed her head and I heard my mobile ring in my pocket. I slid into the hallway and slowly closed the door.

"Hello?" I said.

"Hey, Rocks, listen. My Dad's on his way- give him Roma and he'll leave me alone. Please it's all I ask."

I heard a loud crash on the other side of the line.

"Don't tell him, you idiot." I heard it softly in the background.

"I need to-" There was a loud bang and the line went silent.

So silent, you could hear a pin drop.
