I woke to the sound of the MC Hammer's ringtone - Yasmine was calling me.

I unhooked my phone from the charger, and found it was almost two. Man, I'm so tired I almost slept the day away.

"Yeah?" I answered.

"You're still asleep?"

"Yeah," I yawned.

"Bro, did you forget? Today's Sandra's birthday. It starts at 5."

"You know Mexicans don't arrive to the party until and hour or two after."

"Well, there's a thunderstorm in the forecast, so she wants us to be there on time. I'm coming over."

"Right now?"

"Yeah, so be up when I come over."

"Bro," I whined.

"Ay, stop whining." She hangs the phone.

With a groan, I dragged myself out of bed. I head for the kitchen and filled a bowl with cereals. A knock on the balcony door pulled me away. I practically ran. Waiting on the other side of the door was was Chief.

Yesterday, the Chihulys reaction confirmed Chief's worst scenario. I've been marked by a spirit, a high-level spirit. So Chief went out to find something I can protect myself with.

I opened the door and Chief steps in. He jumps onto the dining table and grabs a dulce (candy) from the bowl.

"This was the best I can find for now." He pulls out from his pocket what looked to be a tiny brown seed.

I take it, a brow raised. "What's this?"

"Dodder."

"And that's?"

"It's a plant that will protect you."

I squinted at it, dubious of its capabilities. "So will this be able to stand against a top-class spirit?"

"No."

I gave him a dead-pan look.

"I got it last minute," he reminds me. "It's not a permanent solution, but it's the only one we have right now. I'll find something else I just need you to have protection now."

"Then, how do I use it?"

"Eat it."

"¡¿Qué?!" (What?!)

"Trust me. By eating it you'll absorb its properties."

I popped it into mouth and swallowed it with ease. "So, what's gonna to happen me? Do I transform or gain powers?"

"Nothing like that. You'll remain the same."

"So how do I use it?"

"That's the easy part: you don't. When the plant senses you're in danger, it'll protect you."

"So, I'm good?"

"For now."

"Did you bring anymore?"

"Sure did." He pats his leg where his secret pocket laid.

"Then, why don't I eat it all?"

"It'll be too much for your body to handle. And you'll turn into the plant."

"Well, good timing 'cause I got some bad news, Chief. I have a party I need to go."

"Then, I'm coming with you." He stretches his body out.

"How?"

"I'll slip under the vehicle. I'll keep an eye out from a distance. There's a chance the spirit will show up."
