"I have neglected to introduce myself. I am Satotz. The First Phase examiner. I will be leading you to the Second Phase."

"Wait, what about the first phase?", a bald ninja questioned. Seriously, was the tunnel not obvious enough? Clearly they were just supposed to follow him through, Kalen thought.

"The first phase has already commenced. Follow me.", Satotz responded.

Satotz starts to increase his speed gradually and Kalen along with everyone else are forced to run to keep up with his pace.

He continues to run before hearing some yelling which gets his attention. Oh, it's the old guy from earlier.

"Hey, wait up kid!", the old guy says so loudly that he may as well just stab everyone's ears instead.

"Hmm?", the kid Leorio is yelling at says, looking up confused.

"You should show the Hunter Exam some respect!", the old man hollered, even louder this time.

"What do you mean?", the kid asks him.

"What do I mean?", he says flabbergasted, "You're  using a skateboard! That's clearly cheating!", he accuses the kid. What a dumbass. Satotz never gave any instructions other than to just follow him.

"Why?", the kid asks again.

"This is clearly an endurance test, thus using a skateboard is cheating!", the old guy repeats again.

"No it isn't.", a green haired boy says, appearing out of nowhere.

"Huh, what are you saying Gon?", the old guy asks, the green haired boy, Gon.

"The examiner only told us to follow him, he didn't give any restrictions on how.", Gon informs the old guy. Huh, the green haired- no Gon, actually figured that out.

"Whose side are you on, eh?", Leorio yells at Gon. Damnit, if this guy yells one more time, he's going to regret it. His patience was running extremely low at the moment.

"Hey, how old are you?", the kid on the skateboard asks, completely changing the subject.

"I'm 12 years old.", Gon answers him.

"Hmm," the kid says doing a cool trick on his skateboard, "guess i'll run too.".

"Wow! That was so cool!", Gon exclaims, smiling brightly.

"I'm Killua.", the boy says, finally introducing himself.

"And I'm Gon!", Gon replies cheerfully.

Gon finally seems to notice Kalen's presence and turns to ask, "Oh, who are you?".

"I'm Kalen".

He decides to stay with the group for a while. Why? He didn't really know. Maybe to have some company for a change. Maybe he really was that pathetically lonely.

At one point Leorio (yes he finally learned his name) is on the brink of giving up so Gon somehow motivates him to keep going.

As the three of them near the end Killua asks, "Hey, why did you guys decide to take the Hunter Exam?".

"Oh, my dad was a Hunter so I want to be a Hunter too! I want to be just like my dad!", Gon says. Yeah, he could never relate to that statement.

Both of the others looked at him, expecting an answer. "Oh, um, I was just bored", he replied smiling. They would be better off not knowing the actual reason.

"Oh, same! I heard the Hunter Exam was extremely difficult so I decided to check it out, but so far it's been so disappointing.", Killua said, pouting slightly.

"Hey Killua, how about we race huh? If I win you buy me dinner and if you win I'll buy you dinner!", Gon says running off with his new friend, leaving Kalen behind.

~•~

Kalen finishes closely behind Killua and Gon. Apparently their race finished in a tie, so they were arguing over who buys who dinner. So childish.

He stood there waiting for more people to finish, and for the long tunnel to close and signal the end of the first part of the exam. He wondered how many applicants had failed the first, and probably easiest part of the exam.
