[I hugged him tightly, as if I could take his pain away]
I looked down at the pale face and the lifeless eyes that were starring into mine. Suddenly, a shiver crossed my spine as I lifted my shaky hand to close them. Sighting, I got up and bit my lips to stop a tear from coming down my cheek.
"He's dead, Captain.", I said with a trembling voice. I took a glance over my shoulder, seeing the short man just standing on a tree branch . I knew I shouldn't have gotten too attached to anyone, yet Gunther has been my best friend since we both entered Levi's Squad. Trying to be tough and stopping the river of tears from breaking down, I got the white sheet and wrapped the dead body gently.
It was the hardest day of my life, I've never encountered such a powerful titan, and yet it didn't act like a normal one. It was not dumb, and because none of us was expecting that, we easily got scared. I stayed by Captain's side the whole time, listening to his orders and trying my best to protect Eren. When he told us to part ways and try to stop that Female Titan, we didn't hesitate. My heart was racing like crazy when I heard those giant footsteps approaching. It was a horrendous scene, with blood everywhere, the trees shaking as the titan was passing them. I was getting my swords ready, my mind full of scary thoughts as I turned around, but the creature was gone. I started flying from tree to tree, trying to find it, but I just ended in front of Captain Levi.
Now it was the two of us wandering deep in the forest. He told me what happened, that he and Mikasa fought the Female Titan before it could run away with Eren. I was glad that he wasn't hurt too bad, just his injured ankle. Somehow, I was still hoping that our comrades were alright, even though it was just a foolish dream. As we were looking for other bodies, I couldn't stop blaming myself, wondering why I wasn't fast enough to keep up with the titan and eventually slice it's nape. I could feel the lost lives scratching my skin, making me swallow my guilt with fear.
Being captive in my own mind, I almost tripped over when Captain stopped in front of me. I was ready to ask what happened, when my face filled with horror. The only member of Levi's Squad that we weren't able to find was lying at the base of a huge tree in a dreadful position. My jaw dropped, looking at poor Petra. Her spine was definitely broken in half, the whole body being covered in blood. I didn't even realize the face that Levi made. He slightly narrowed at the horrific sight in front of him.
"She didn't deserve this...", I dared to say, kneeling besides her corpse. We shared the same room for the past few years, I just couldn't believe that now I'll have to be alone every night. As I was getting ready to wrap Petra in the sheet, one fact hit me like a brick. I was the only survivor, excluding Levi, from his Squad. Why me? How did I get so lucky? I kept wondering, as we were approaching the big walls, what would've happened if I had found the titan earlier...
