Spring Vacation
(let's be honest I'm just going to lay in bed all vacation so I wrote a polished version of the dream I had the other night, or nightmare i don't really know, it was only bad at the end)
I woke up late as the sun was already high enough in the sky to torture me with light from my closed window. I hate mornings. The day always promises that something special will finally happen to me. But it never does. Like a dog shaking cobwebs from it's mind, I rolled out of bed to the sounds of chaos in the kitchen. My family was already up. What joy.
My spring vacation started out like every other. The same friends texting about what we should do...the same answer I always gave...nothing. Nothing ever happens to me. Nothing ever changes. I live a life stuck in rewind. Suddenly, I heard a sound outside my bedroom door. It was loud and it shook the house. At first I moved away from the window, but I couldn't help myself. I moved slowly to the window. Carefully I pulled open the blinds and saw my best friend Charley standing outside my window next to my uncle who was pressure washing his boat. I hated the sound of the pressure washer, It was loud and obnoxious, however I must admit It worked rather well. I slid my sandals on, tied my hair up and ran down stairs to greet her.
"Elizabeth, where are you going?" My mother said as I reached for the door knob. "You aren't dressed and you haven't eaten yet."
"Well it's just I saw Charley outside and I want to invite her in so she doesn't have to stand there and listen to uncle Chad's pressure washer."
She sighed. "Alright then, hurry it up."
My mother wasn't very pleased that I wasn't going with them to the lake this year. Or at least I wasn't going at the same time as them, I had made plans to hang out with Charley at the creek that day, I also wanted an excuse to not have to watch my little brother.
I stepped onto the porch with my hands over my eyes, the sun seems especially bright when you first wake up. In fFront of me was what appeared to be an angel, however despite insisting on not being an angel I still saw her as one.
It was Charley of course, I recognized those white floral print vans anywhere. Her lovely yellow floral print dress flowed in the morning wind, her hair draped gracefully across her shoulders over her blush pink cardigan and a yellow bandana that matched her dress, tied up around her head like a headband. She was beautiful, like some sort of fairy that you'd find living in a cottage. "Good morning! You look darling as per usual." I beamed.
"Aw, thank you!" She smiled back at me bashfully. "Here come inside, It's loud out here and we wouldn't want your dress to get wet from that pressure washer would we?" She chuckled, "No certainly not." Suddenly the pressure washers rumbling stopped. "Oh good morning Liz, and good morning Chuck I haven't seen you in awhile."
"Good morning to you too!"
"Say I heard you aren't coming with us to the lake this year, are you feeling sick?" He seemed concerned. "No i'm fine, It's just me and Charley planned to walk down to the creek and have a picnic instead." He picked up a drying towel and began to dry the boat. "All right then, you girls have fun!"
"We will thank you!" We then went back up to my bedroom. "We'll have to stop by the market for a few things but other then that we have everything. Did you choose a blanket?" I poked my head out the neck hole of my dress. "Yes indeed, it's that white one on my desk. Hopefully it doesn't get all grassy, I tried to choose a material that would be big enough to sit on and also wouldn't get dirty as fast." I said slipping my dress on the rest of the way. "Can you help me lace this up?"
"Certainly, also I was wondering if we could get scones. I've really been wanting some scones lately." she said tying the remaining lace of my dress into a bow. "Oh yes, can we get the blueberry ones, those are amazing." I slipped on my white flats and brushed my hair. My mother knocked on the door, "I put breakfast away, we're leaving now. If you need anything call us."
