Chapter Twelve
Marvel's P.O.V.
I can't believe it. She's sitting with him. That guy who obviously looks like he's trying too hard to be cool. That guy who looks like a total emo player who fancies a quick game with the ladies.
I also noticed during English class, Mrs. Howard told him to sit with who he thinks is cutest. Of course he chose her.
It's freaking torture, watching him try to flirt with her. Honestly, it makes me so... jealous. Why can't she flirt with me? Why did I have to screw up the only chance I had with her for some chick at a party I can't even remember?
God, I'm such an idiot. I let her go. I betrayed her trust. I think... I think actually broke her heart of steel.
Oh dear god. I managed to break a heart of freaking steel. Those kinds of people are hard to earn trust from. When they hurt, they hurt bad. They're so used to being held together that when they crack, they completely fall apart. And I screwed it up. I broke her heart. Although, she probably doesn't care about me.
Goddammit.
AGGHHH. WHY CAN'T I JUST BE GOOD AND NICE AND SMART? WHY DON'T I GET TO HOLD HER AND HUG HER AND STROKE HER PRETTY HAIR AND MAKE FUNNY LITTLE INSIDE JOKES?
Oh god. Ha, look at me getting all worked up.
"Hey, you alright, man?" I hear Devon ask from over my shoulder. I didn't realize I was staring at Harley and her new... friend.
"Yeah. Just... yeah, fine." I try to play it cool, but he knows me too well to believe this crap. He teases, "You'd be fine if pigs could fly. And, no, throwing a pig out the window doesn't count."
I chuckle at his remark. He always knows how to make me laugh.
I look down before sighing and deciding to tell him.
"Dev, I screwed up."
He quickly responds with, "Yeah, I know." He slaps my back reassuringly and says, "Don't worry, man. Someday you'll meet someone very special. Someone who won't press charges."
His sarcasm is taken lightly. "I already met her. And then I lost her because I'm stupid."
"No, you ain't."
"Ain't isn't a word."
"See? You're not that stupid. You're smart enough to know what's not a word."
I raise an eyebrow, signifying that I understand his attempt at trying to make me feel better, but with a sarcastic tone. "How 'intelligent' of me to correct you."
"Eh. We both know I'm only smart in a classroom."
"Figures," I say, hiding a cheeky grin.
He then slaps my arm like he just now remembers that he has to tell me something. "Oh, and hey. Guess what?"
"What, the tenth dentist caved and now they all recommend Trident?" I retort sarcastically. It sounded a bit rude, but he knows not to take my sarcasm seriously.
He squints his eyes and says flatly, "Oh my god. That's so funny I forgot to laugh."
"So I rendered you speechless?" I say, wiggling an eyebrow. "Ha ha, no. I just wanted to let you know... I'm hosting a party. It's not a big one, so you can't screw up that bad. It's just a little... bonfire thing that's gonna happen tomorrow night at my cousin's lake house. It's only, like, a fifteen minute drive." He adds for fun, "Be there, or be square."
