Our bags were packed and ready to go at the front door next to the coat hanger. Ashlyn, my aunt had finally arrived four hours late, she had offered to house sit. I grabbed up my Spiderman comic and adjusted my glasses on my nose. Stupid glasses. They always slid down my nose at the worst times. Ashlyn, placed her saturated umbrella on the coat hanger, I watched as a puddle formed on the wooden flooring.
“Hi Peyton, where’s your mum?” I scowled at her and got up from the warm comfortable couch, I was sitting on to find my Jessie- my mother. I jogged up the stairs and ducked into my parent’s room. Ewwh! I thought as I witnesses them both kissing.
“Mum, Ashlyn is here,” I said breaking up the kissing party. Jessie pranced down stairs to greet her. I walked to my father, he gave a warm smile to me.
“Hey kiddo. I got a present for you,” he leant over to grab a gift bag with a blue and purple dotted pattern on it. Immediately I reached my hand to pull it out, my jaw dropped. It was the latest issue of Ultimate Spiderman. I thanked him ten times and kisses him on the cheek. “Now you can’t read it, at least not till we get back. Promise?” I nodded and kissed him once more.
“Ready to go? The taxi is here,” Jessie asked standing with a wide smile on her face at the door. Merlin- my father got up from the bed side and placed his hand on my shoulder. As we walked to the front door, I slipped on my navy jacket and watched my parent’s wave Ashlyn goodbye. Merlin lifted his and my bag up and passed it to the tall limo driver. “We will be back before summer break, I promise”. It was only a two weeks away but with Ashlyn, anything could go wrong.
It wasn’t every week we would get to fly to Relain, I was excited and so were they. Knowing that this whole trip was just a lame business convention, I knew it was going to be an adventure. We slipped into the limo, it was going to be a long drive to airport. But I loved driving at night, I loved how the cities lights shone so bright. My father placed his arm behind my neck and snuggled me in close to his warm body.
Ashlyn stood outside out mansion still waving with the biggest grin on her face, like she had just won the lottery. I despised her, she always seemed to treat me like a waste of space. I was fifteen, old enough to accept that she was definitely not a good person in my books. The one person I was going to miss was Ryder, my best friend since second grade. I just hoped he would be able to survive the last weeks of school alone.
My father body spray was so soft and calming, no matter where we were it reminded me of him. A buzz in my jacket startled me, I slid my phone out of my pocket and read the incoming text. ‘I love you too – Ryder’ I smiled and looked up to notice my father had read it too, he beamed and kissed the top of my head.

Being the daughter of a billionaire has its perks; getting to fly in a private jet, was one of them. Having never been in a plane before, my heart raced. Jessie and I took a seat at one of the white leather booths. Various liquors and snacks were neatly arranged on the table. Finally my father came back from speaking with the captain, who happened to have followed him out. “First flight I hear,” he cheerfully asked. I nodded enthusiastically. “Well ma ’lady nothing is better than flying, you have nothing to worry about,” the captain said something to my father that I didn’t make out.
“Alright let’s get comfortable, it’s a long flight,” Merlin took a seat at the booth with my mother and I. He clicked in my seatbelt and then his own. The plane began to shake and speed down the runway, I held my eyes closed tight. Jessie placed her hand on my own, slowly I opened my eyes and looked out the window.
“Wow,” I finally said. We were officially in the air, the airport was getting smaller and smaller. The feeling was incredible, though my entire life I had hated heights, I’d never felt so free.
“Beautiful isn’t it?” Jessie asked.
“I’ll be right back,” Merlin got up from his seat and made his way into the flight room, once again.
“What is he doing?” I asked Jessie, who was now setting up her laptop on the liquor table.
“You know your father, always has to be doing something,”
I unclicked my belt and walked down the hall of the plane to a door. I tried the handle – locked. Looking around I noticed a pan flit of Relain at one of the tables. The plane began to shake slightly, abruptly I landed into an empty booth. “Just some turbulence, we will be ok,” my mother’s calm voice reassured me. I opened the pan flit and skimmed through it, some of the things Relain had were breath taking. The springs, the theme parks; it was all very exciting.
“What are you doin’ Pey?” Merlin asked noticing me a few booths away.
“I don’t know,” I chuckled to myself. Merlin came running for me, I squealed. He began tickling me, I couldn’t help but laugh. He chuckled and we both fell to the floor of the plane. He was the best father I could have wished for, not only a great father and amazing business man. I was definitely a daddy’s girl. “How long until we land?” I asked getting up and redoing my hair with a smile still on my face.
“About an hour or two,” he answered getting off the floor as well. I slid into the booth I had before and stared out the window. All that I could see was darkness. I yawned, Merlin slid in next to me and held me tight. “Get some sleep, its midnight,” I checked the clock and nodded, once again I laid back on his warm body and fell asleep.
A loud siren blurted through the plane, I awoke to find myself strapped in and laying on the seat. I undid my seatbelt and ran to the captain’s quarters. “What is going on?” I asked scared out of my mind, my heart raced.
“Get back in there and strap yourselves in!” Merlin demanded to mum and I.
“But Dad!” I cried out.
“Come on,” Jessie rushed us back to the booths.
“Mayday! Mayday! Unknown objects interfering course!” the captain yelled. “Mayday! Eagle 109 calling in for assistance!” Jessie clicked on my seatbelt and held me. Tears streamed down my face, I was scared, I didn’t want to die this way. Was this it? Was it the end for us?
“Damn it!” Dad came out of the control room and swore.
“Dad?” I whimpered.
“We are flying blind,” his face said it all, he was just as scared as I was.
“Merlin!” the captain called out and he ducked back in.
“Are we going to die, Mum?” I asked, looking up at her worried face.
“Of course not, we are going to be fine, it’s just our controls are out. They will be back,” Jessie held me closer and brushed her fingers through my hair. I was so scared I couldn’t catch my breath, I swore I was about to pass out. “Hey! Stop panicking, you’re going pale,” she gulped and took her phone out. “Here,” she passed it to me and played a home video to take my mind off it.
The video was of mum, dad, Ryder and I at the lab of where he worked, he was practising his speech for the companies twenty anniversary…
“Do I go now?” Dad asked in the video. I nudged his shoulder and stood next to Ryder. His scruffy brown hair covering his eyes. “You’re recording?” Merlin asked as he stepped onto a lab desk as if it was a stage. He cleared his throat, “I Merlin Jovan of Eagle do stand before you today of all days to- what am I don’t again?” Ryder and I laughed at him. The video brought a small smile to my face, but I remembered about the plane.
“Keep watching,” mum told me holding the phone closer.
“I can’t,” I paused the video and began bawling my eyes out. Jessie placed the phone into her pocket. The plane began to shake heavily. I grabbed mum with both arms. “I love you!” I squirmed. A bright light began to creep through all the windows, it got brighter and brighter. “What’s happening?” I yelled in terror. Merlin raced out of the quarters and clicked on his seatbelt. The sympathy in his eyes said it all, it was over. We were going to die. He mouthed the words I love you over the loud sounds of the planes rumbling.
The bright light became too strong I couldn’t see, I closed my eyes and wished for this to all be a dream. The sound of a huge boom echoed through the plane, the heat of fire seized my skin and I was gone.
