I let out a huge breath as I type the last words for my report about Zayn leaving One Direction for a piece that would be appearing in tomorrow's magazine issue. It's really disappointing that the mysterious lover had left the five-some so soon. But then reality always comes and destroys my thoughts and I began to think that it was bound to happen someday anyway...
I fax my manuscript to my editor and shut down my computer, tampering away in my cubicle making sure my valuables were locked away in my drawer before I left. I stood up and rolled my neck in circles until I felt my muscles loosen up making me feel better. I turn my head to say goodbye to my coworker, Jane, in the cubicle next to me and she greets me a 'Happy Anniversary' to me and my one year boyfriend, Zervin.
As I start walking out of the editorial building I can't help the small smile forming on my lips as I recall exactly a year before how he asked me to be his girlfriend with a ring pop and another ring he bought from the 25¢ toy machine. He told me that the farther we developed in our relationship, he would gradually get me better rings and that's exactly what he did. On our five months, he gave me a ring that had my birth stone imbedded into the middle, and on our 1o months, he decided I was ready for a friendship ring.
I raise my hand into the sunlight and move it ever so slightly to make the golden friendship ring shine and glisten in the light. I cannot wait to get home to him.
Before heading home, I stop by the small bakery at the corner of our neighborhood to pick up my order. It was a small, round, white cake and an astronaut figure standing at the head, towering above the words written in blue icing saying "This year has been out of this world with you!" It's probably the cheesiest thing I've ever gotten him but I think he would let it slide since it's our anniversary.
I look down at my wristwatch and see that I had some time before Zervin got back home. I guided my way through the crowded sidewalk to the party store and picked up 10 customized balloons, they were colorful, some were glow in the dark, and one was deflated but that's how I wanted it to be.
I took my time walking home and admired all the memories we made with each other- the time I got crazy stupid drunk and he had to hold my hair out of my face so I could puke in the toilet, or that time I decided I wanted to take a swing at the piñata at his baby cousins birthday party and accidentally hit him in the stomach instead (I kissed him 24/7 that week so that he would forget being angry at me).
Once I arrived home and opened the front door, the sound of the shower running became noticeable, indicating he was home. I set down all of the things in the living room and tiptoed down the hallway, past the bathroom, and into our bedroom. Standing in the closet, I was torn between the choice of chic black and hot red, both being short, spaghetti-strapped dresses.
I went with the black dress because I realized I was just wasting my time so the closest one would do great since he could finish his shower any minute and I still didn't fix my surprise decorations.
Once I slipped into my flowing dress, I tiptoed back into the living room once again, still the shower running as background noise. I opened the cake box and slipped the cake onto the coffee table. Beside the table I arranged the balloons to revolve around the big yellow balloon. I stepped back and surveyed my work, taking in the big picture. I realize a handwritten letter with my name on it protruding beneath the stack of mail on the table. I took it and noticed the handwriting was from Zervin. I smiled a small smile and opened the envelope.
Inside, was a plain, white card, nothing on the outside. The shower in the bathroom stopped running and I hurriedly opened the card. In it, it read:
I'm sorry.
Forgive me.
I'm leaving you.Realization hit me so hard and here's reality being a jerk to me once a-fucking-gain! I shove the card back into the envelope and throw it back onto the table. I'm frantically trying to get rid of the balloons now and accidentally pop one as Zervin appears from the hallway. I have no idea what else to do so I do the only thing I've practiced in my head and yelled,"surprise"!
