I'd like to dedicate this prologue to TwinCity1518 for the awesome cover. Thanks so much!
~Prologue~
She was running. Running as fast as her long legs would take her and as fast as her body would allow. The sound of her heeled boots connecting with the asphalt echoed off of the buildings, making her fear level go through the roof. It was starting to consume her body and creep its way into her thoughts. Her father had once told her that fear is only a state of mind. Once you let it swallow you up, things get 1000 times harder. She could feel her breathing become restricted and her running beginning to slow down.
No, she thought. No no no no no! She would not fail herself. Her team. Her father...
The simple thought of her father made a different wave of emotions spread through her body. Respect. Love. Anger. Guilt. Betrayal. That last one effected her the most. The betrayal from her father was enough to get her to make her biggest mistake. She turned the corner into another alleyway and hit a dead end. There was no way out. She was trapped.
Glowing green fireballs were aimed at her feet from her pursuer. They missed every time; landing where she was only a split second before.
"You little wretch! You actually think you can out run me!" The woman let out a haunting laugh that bounced off the buildings.
The girl scanned her surroundings, trying to come up with a plan to get herself to safety. She was instantly struck with one. It was a simple move she had learned from a friend. It had been a while since she last practiced the trick, but it's all she could think of. Her eyes judged the hight and momentum she would need to reach the fire escape. There wouldn't be enough space for her to gain much speed, but she'll have to go with what she's got. Turning around, she looked at the woman hovering in the air.
The hag let out a bone chilling cackle. "It's over now. Your time has come to an end and I will gladly be the one to cause it." Her blood red lips curled into a smile that was so evil, so sinister, that it had the hair on the girl's arms rise.
This is it, the young girl thought. My chance. Then she turned around and ran towards the red brick wall. With each step, her legs propelled her faster and farther until she reached a covered dumpster. She ran up a wooden board leaning on the side of it and continued on the dumpster lid. She then jumped, full speed, at the only fire escape in the ally and swung her body over the side.
I did it, she thought, barely breathless. I actually made it.
Before she could move an inch, a bright blinding light shone from the sky. That's when everything turned white.
