Chapter One: Why are you Angry

"Hey stranger!" Ume yelled from below. It was hard for her to see the guy she was calling to. The afternoon sun was in her eyes from looking up. He was smoking a cigarette on top of the school roof, hidden in a small corner of the building. She could see he was wearing a black and white, thick jacket, laying on his backpack looking out over the school yard, watching the other kids play soccer.

'Found you, Kaigaku'. Ume thought as she approached the boy. Kaigaku looked down to see the girl who was calling him. It was Gyutaro's sister, Ume. What a pain, now I have to deal with this, He ignored her and continued to sluk. Ume was a...'special' person to Kaigaku, and by special he meant 'never talk to her, ever'. He knew about Ume's over protective older brother and didn't want to get on Gyutaro's bad side. He had enough problems as it was now.

"What do you want?", Kaigaku replied coldly, attempting to 'scare' Ume away.

"Come down here. I wanna talk to you" Ume asked, though there was a bit of annoyance in her voice.

Her words confused Kaigaku a little bit. 'Why would she want to talk to me? She must be bored and wants to spend her time making fun of me.' But he dare not get shaken up by her request."I'm not coming down". He looked away and ignored her again. She knew nothing of his life, they never spoke to each other except when they were fighting. So why now?

Ume's anger grew even more. "Alright then if you won't come down, I'll go up there!". Ume jumped as high as she could and caught the top of the short building and began to climb over the protective fencing. She pulled herself up, which took only a bit of effort (she was a strong young woman) and sat beside Kaigaku.

Sure he was a little impressed at her 'wall climbing abilities', but he still ignored her and continued to watch the soccer game down below. Kaigaku noticed Ume was also watching, very intently, I might add. 'I didn't know she had a thing for sports', He thought, recalling her impressive jump.

"You know, you could have just come through the roof door", Kaigaku spat. He pointed to the roof top's door a few meters away.

"It wouldn't have been as much fun though! I've never climbed a wall before until today!" Ume grabbed an apple out of her backpack and began to eat it.

Kaigaku might have slapped himself for staring at her for too long. He shook his head to clear his thoughts

"So. Why are you here? It's not like we're best friends or anything. You must be bored" Kaigaku askes the white and lime haired girl. She hadn't said much to him, considering she was known around the school as the 'popular pretty girl' and 'chatterbox'.

"You caught me. My brother is busy with student council stuff, and Nakime already went home. She explained. "But we have a play date this afternoon, so I won't be a burden on you for too long!" She added with a slit smirk.

Kaigaku could only reply with a simple "hmm..." He didn't know anything about girl problems, but he did know he could slightly hear a strange bumping sound...

Ume's heart was racing. She could feel the pulsing of her blood and her cheeks becoming light pink, slowly shifting to bright red. 'Damn hormones!' She cursed. 'Just calm down, it's a simple question. He won't say no...Right?!'Ume turned to glare at him. 'I guess it's time'.

"You have a phone right?" Ume pointed to Kaigaku's backpack.

"Hmm? Yeah, I do.", He reached into a smaller pocket and pulled out a phone with a black, yellow, and blue case, decorated with a 'comma' (,) type pattern, same as his string choker/ necklace.

"Can I have your number?" Ume eagerly grinned and quickly reached for the boy's phone.

"Hold it woman!". Kaigaku was a bit annoyed with the girl. 'Interrupting my alone time, and asking for my phone number?! What's her deal?!'. He dropped his cigarette and stood up. "Why? What the hell are you trying to do? I already have enough problems, I don't need you lunging at me, trying to take my stuff!"

Ume looked up at Kaigaku. She was used to him yelling, but not him actually angry. She continued to stare at him with a blank, slightly annoyed expression. 'You know how he is, just give him some time', She reminded herself.

Kaigaku could tell why he was so angry. 'Grandpa had died two weeks ago. Of course the scars were still fresh, but letting my anger out on this girl, it's stupid.' He took a deep breath and sat down.

He wanted to say sorry, but kept silent and stared at the soccer players again..."Here" Kaigaku looked away and handed his phone to Ume."Put your number in there..."Ume gave him a large smile and added her phone number in his contacts.

"Ding Dong Ding Dong"

The building's bells rang, signaling the students who stayed after school to head home. Kaigaku began to gather his things but stopped suddenly. Two small arms reached across his stomach area and gave him a tight squeeze. At that moment he felt his heart stop. He couldn't think for a brief five seconds, but they felt like five years.

"Um-"

"Why are you so angry?" Ume cut him off as she hugged him from behind. He could feel her soft chest against his back. He could also feel his face was on fire.

"Don't be so mean to me anymore, just me. If you're mad, talk about it. It'll get your mind off the bad things. Okay?" Ume's request only sent more questions through Kaigaku's mind.

"Okay...BUT GET OFF ME FIRST!" He shoved Ume off his waist. He couldn't say anymore to her until he took a 10 week vacation 10 billion miles away.

"Good," Ume replied. "I'll see ya later!" She jumped down from the building and joined her brother at the school gate. Kaigaku could only stare at her from afar.
