Thunder boomed in the distant cracking the air, with darkness prevailing the vicinity. The smoke continued to erupt from the engine of the squashed car as the couples struggled to get out of it. No others were in sight to help. No one was ever there at such times.
Xander fought hard to keep his consciousness. His throat felt parched, a metallic taste of liquid lingering on his lips. It was blood. Just not on his lips only, but everywhere his gaze fell over was covered in blood.
Nothing could explain the dire feeling in the pit of his stomach when he saw the couple in the other car wailing for help. He ignored the overwhelming ache he felt in every inch of his body as he struggled in his pocket.
He just had to reach for his phone.
His weary eyes travelled over the distance where he saw his car burning in flames. A strangled voice made up his throat as he tried to dial 911. The shattered screen of the device did little help to his vision but Xander knew there wasn't much time left.
"911, what's your emergency?" A feminine voice spoke suddenly, taking his full attention to the responder.
"Please, I-I," He fumbled to get the words out, his body threatening to slip into unconsciousness.
"Sir, where are you?" The tone of the receiver now sounded worried which somehow brought reassurance to him.
"W-we are on the highway of-of the Holly...wood hills," Xander dropped the phone, feeling his eyes droop low as he let the darkness shroud him in. But he couldn't, he still had to go to his sister. Britney needed him and he couldn't even be there for her. A lone tear fell amidst the pool of blood he was stuck in.
His thoughts were cut short as he heard the voice of one of the couple crying out someone's name.
"Abby, we are so sorry," the lady cried, "We-we are so sorry for leaving you," her voice was muffled by the oil dripping from the tanker. More tears followed trail of the first as Xander witnessed the lady crying for her loved ones, being hung upon her husband who seemed unresponsive.
It was then that Xander could hear the sirens getting nearer. But it was too late. The toppled car with the couples still inside blasted off with ear silencing roar into segments, the vicious flame spreading out like a wildfire.
"No! Please," Xander cried with both anger and sadness, his body impassive to his feelings. His mind was clogged, the uncertainty of his life didn't matter anymore to him. He looked at the sky above him and breathed out a prayer. He just had one last wish.
Abby...
That's the only thing he could think as he fell into oblivion with the guilt for the aftermath of the accident he had caused.
