Before the ESC

I'm waiting at the bus stop for Marlena, my BFF. It's just before 7 a.m. and so are we
have 8 hours of school ahead of us after the bus ride.

>> I'm so excited << my best friend comes screeching towards me. >> What is it this time? << I ask with a laugh. It keeps turning a mosquito into an elephant. Last week she was happy for hours to have a butterfly on her hand. I also need your optimism and zest for life. >> Tomorrow is the first semi-final! << she says enthusiastically. So much energy in the early morning ... >> You have to tell me about something << I answer. >> From the Eurovision Song Contest! You know where every country in Europe sends someone with a song and, strangely enough, Australia too. But I think it will be really difficult this year, because they are all really good and omg this one guy ... << >> Hold your breath first << I interrupt her and have to smile. She really thrives when she's interested in a particular topic and can tell someone about it. >> Is it already Esc Week? I missed that completely this year! << I say to Marlena.

Our bus comes and she babbles to me the entire trip with some details about individual artists. It's supposed to be kind of a love story and someone got disqualified or something. I'm not really coming with her.

After 8 excruciatingly long lessons, a lunch that tasted like nothing again and some drama because of a bad test, I'm finally sitting on the bus home.

I put my backpack in the corner and switch from my jeans to more comfortable gray sweatpants. I throw myself on my bed and open my laptop. There I have to close a few tabs from last night, but I leave YouTube there. I type "Eurovision 2021" in the search bar at the top. I actually follow the ESC every year, but somehow I totally forgot this time. I should at least listen to all the songs beforehand. The very first search result is a recap of all songs. I hit play and stare into my laptop.

The Eurovision intro starts playing and I hum along. The first song is a stunner. >> Her voice, wow << I think, but then the short clip is over and the next one begins. Marlena was right, this year it will be really difficult to get to the final. All the songs are really strong. I don't even know which one I think is best. It's also really impressive how many countries sing in their own language.

Suddenly I get a message from Marlena: "Have you already listened to the songs? The Swiss guy is really cute, isn't he?" I send her a voice message: >> No, he's not exactly my type haha. But his song is good. <<

I can find some interviews and challenges on the official YouTube channel of the ESC. Even if I don't really like this year's song from Germany, Jendrik seems really sympathetic. I also love the other artists really quickly. My best friend was right, it's going to be really hard to sort out.

After clicking through videos for hours, I finally landed on Instagram. I see a new post: Ping Pong match between Ireland and Italy! The artists are linked on the post and I click to see the profile of the Italians. >> How do you pronounce it? Maneskin, oh no, there's a circle above the a, so maybe more Moneskin? Who knows << I say to myself and my eyes fall on the latest post from Måneskin. Wow, in the short excerpt in the recap I didn't even notice how good they actually look ... I don't even know at who to look at first. All four have such an incredible charisma. In the picture they are all linked, so I also follow them on their private profiles. Well, they're not really private. Funny, Damiano, the singer, has a lot more followers than the other band members. He's also significantly more active on Instagram, it looks like. But it doesn't matter. I think I'm already a fan of them.

A little later in the evening I scroll through Tiktok. My algorithm has apparently noticed that I am dealing with the ESC, because I almost only get videos on the topic. Now it's about how hot Måneskin is. The person is definitely right. Hopefully some good pictures of them will be shown now, which I can save in my newly created folder. Uiii the picture of Damiano is really good. Another one from Damiano and one more. Then the video ends. Did I read it wrong and it was all about how hot Damiano is? No, it says "Måneskin". I think I now know why he has so many more followers on Instagram ...

I'm back to school tomorrow and I want to watch the first semifinals, so I won't go to bed very early. I really have to recharge my energy reserves a bit now.
