Today's the first day to my new life, I just moved out with my friend Riley, and we found a great apartment downtown on the 6th floor. Having just finished high school we were a little nervous on the thought of university so we decided to take a year off.
"Aubrey! Did you see the cute boy we passed in the lobby? The blonde one?"
"Riles you know I'm not looking for a relationship, not after Brent, it's too soon."
"You have to get out there sometime, you can't let that ass bug you forever!"
"I know, I'll try." I replied dropping a box of my clothes on the ground. As I looked up i peered out the left of the window at the tall buildings and cars rushing by on the street. The only problem with our side of the building was we got a pretty great view of this old apartment building across the street. It wasn't the ugliest building but it wasn't anything special. Yet i admired the lighy brown bricks all perfectly in place, the view of the homes of random strangers through their windows. I admired one home with light blue walls with a wooden brown dresser. On the left stood a tall mirror next to the closet full of dark coloured clothes. I just barely saw the edge of a fuzzy white rug laying on the hardwood and the edges of a large bed full of white pillows and a white cover.
"Aubrey stop staring out the window, people are going to think you're a perv."
"Admiring the view outside is not being a perv." I giggled.
The day went on and on, going up and down the elevator grabbing our boxes until it was eventually dinner time. I lay on our new couch resting from the constant walking and lifting while Riley, a cook herself was extremely excited as it was her first time using the new pans and pots. I was forced to live in an apartment with a large kitchen just for her sake, and tons of counter space for her experimenting.
I grabbed a magazine out from the box beside the couch and flipped through the pages. My favorite part of celeb magazines was covering up the votes to who wore the dress better and guess for myself. I compared a picture of Reese Witherspoon and Beyonce and laughed knowing "the queen" Beyonce obviously wore it better. I read article after article with a sudden thought of how crazy it would be to have so many people love you. I could never imagine myself having secret numbers, walking onto the streets in sunglasses to avoid being recognized or being falsely accused of being pregnant or having had plastic surgery. I'm that dull, boring book nerd that no one ever really notices. I've never really walked into a coffee shop and had people turn their heads at me. I've never had a real boyfriend even. I'd been on the odd dates with cute boys but there was no one like me. No one i could compare my love for books with, no one I could picture myself laying on the couch
I hopped off the couch and grabbed my purse and jean jacket waving bye to Riley before she could even ask where I was going because, I didn't really know myself. I headed down the stairs and out the front door. The sun lit up the tall buildings and the bright blue sky. I smiled brightly taking a left from my front door to explore the stores downtown. I've never really been downtown except for my occasional doctors appointment or to find a starbucks (they happen to be on practically every corner downtown). I walked down the street, peering at all the unique clothing stores and craft stores. I turned to go into a small store called Oasis, I looked down at my purse to grab my phone to text Riley about it when I bumped into another person. My purse fell out of my hands and my lip balm rolled across the cement along with my mascara, pens, my lotion and other junk like gum wrappers and receipts. I immediately bent over grabbing my scattered belongings when i saw another body bend down with me from the corner of my eyes.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there." the man said.
I was too nervous to look up at him after hearing his hunky voice. "It was my fault, I shouldn't expect people to just clear the way for me" I replied peering down as I reached for items.
"For a girl as pretty as you, I'm surprised people don't do that."
I glanced up at him, stopping my hands from reaching for more receipts. My gaze locked with his wide green eyes. I could feel the back of my throat dry up as I looked at him, and as he looked back at me. I saw specks of grey hidden behind the gorgeous shade of green. I thought of my childhood, walking through the ravine in the summer as all the trees were green and bright, so lively and full of vibrancy. I thought of the leaves I'd pick and bring home even though they'd shrivel up and fade into a dull colour the next day. But his eyes, they were full of life, I thought how the green of his eyes would never fade any lighter. How it would always be so radiant, how it'd always be summer time in his eyes.
I swallowed feeling like I'd been staring forever and looked down grabbing the rest of my belongings and then standing up. He stood up with me, handing me my lip balm to grab. I smiled at him reaching out for it, feeling the smallest inch of his on mine as I wrapped my fingers around it. As fast as this all happened he smiled back quickly and walked past me leaving me speechless. I turned back around hoping to catch that last glimpse of nostalgia in his eyes but he was already lost in the maze of people.
