Gulf's stomach quivered violently in equal parts security at Mew's fierce thoughts and terror at his unknown future. His hand tightened on Mew's.
"Tell papa what?" a deep, soothing voice asked as a large form stepped inside the little nook. The large alpha was captivating in his looks and his steps were light as he glided across the floor and placed a kiss on Grandmother's cheek. This male was the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome and an older spitting image of the man beside him, holding his hand.
Shit. Papa.
"Morning mae, you were missed in the billiards hall last night. Alpha Minn was in attendance" the alpha said with a small smile.
Grandmother scoffed, "as if I have time to go sit in a room full of smoke and whores while I wipe the floor with you pathetic alphas. It is rather boring dear son of mine."
"I don't know..." he hedged, "Minn was on his game. It would have been a sight to see you two battle it out" he finished with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
"I'll not be married off to some dusty alpha. Been there done that. I'll spend the rest of my limited time with my precious grandkids and that... woman of yours."
"Dao is not so bad mae, how many times do we have to have this conversation."
"Hmmph. As many times as it takes for you to see that gold digging woman as she is. Did you know she slapped your son last night? In front of the whole dinner!"
The alpha's attention slowly turned towards Mew, his head tilting lightly in question, and Gulf let go of his hand immediately and shrank back in his chair. His presence was so overwhelming.
The scraping of a chair on the floor startled everyone as Mew's papa sat down heavily and his eyes missed nothing as they roved over Mew and then to Gulf sitting next to him.
"What's going on son? Your mae was in a fuss last night about some society gossip but I ignored her as usual."
"Papa..." Mew began and then paused as if choosing his words carefully, "you've always told me that I'm free to make my own decisions."
"Of course, as long as they don't bring harm to the family. Just spit it out son."
Mew flicked a glance at Gulf a look of apology on his face, "mae wants me to marry Zan to join our houses but I've already mated with another and he's pregnant."
Heavy silence filled the room and tension sprung in the air.
"This is Gulf, papa" Mew hesitated before introducing him.
A weighted gaze shifted to stare at him with intensity, and he reluctantly met eyes filled with judgement. All his omega instincts told him to make himself as small as possible as the attention of the room shifted to him.
"And your bloodline boy?"
"Papa!"
Gulf sucked in a large breath, "no its ok Mew, I don't know my family sir."
"Mew, he's not of high society?"
"No papa."
Disappointment tinged the mood.
"Oh, as if its all about blood and wealth you dumb boy, nothing you can do about it now. What's done is done, now calm down those alpha pheromones. You're smothering the room and scaring Gulf" grandmother commanded as she smacked her son on the back of the head.
The alpha's attention never left him as he ignored his mae, "and where do you live Gulf?"
"I-In town sir" Gulf answered stuttering.
