The hallway started to fill up with students ready to make their way home after a long day of boring lectures, stumbling their way through the small spaces as they hit each other from the lack of room. I came out later than expected, hoping that I would get the chance to leave before the rest comes out of their classes however, ended up falling asleep through the last period.
I hurriedly pushed my way through the jam-packed corridor and made my way to the girl's bathroom, not wanting to continue that type of struggle. Locking the stall door, I sat on the toilet seat, waiting for the quietness to settle in before I can finally leave without any problems.
It's been a few minutes since I waited for the ruckus to cease, yet, it feels like more and more students are making their way to the corridor. I stayed silent, going through my phone out of boredom while I wait.
It was weird at first, thinking nobody would have decided to wait it out like I am doing, but, when the bathroom door opened and two pairs of shoes made their way to the counter, it felt like I wasn't the only one struggling with what was going on outside.
I shoved my phone in my pocket and made my way to open the door, however, the sound of their voices made me freeze in place. It's those two girls again from this morning.
"I'm sorry, Sarah. I didn't know you had a connection with Emily. I really shouldn't have said that..." she said, filled with guilt and regret.
"It's alright. Though, I kind of expected that you knew since half of the school already knows."
"Do you... wanna talk about it?"
It was silent for a minute and I could feel how uncomfortable Sarah is even through the metal door. I don't know if her friend notices, but I feel like she's oblivious to the fact that Sarah has something more sinister going on between Emily and her.
I sat quietly on the toilet seat while holding my breath, my feet in between my legs so she wouldn't catch me eavesdropping on their little secret.
"She used to be my best friend. We used to be inseparable, always going shopping, eating together at lunch, until she decided to break it off one day. She said she couldn't be my friend anymore, that she found someone better, richer. We haven't spoken at all, and I blame myself for what happened between us even though I didn't do anything wrong. Every morning, I thought of asking her to forgive me for whatever I did to make her leave, but I couldn't.." she said, her voice trembling.
I could tell she was as lying about Emily finding someone better than her, probably for the sake of her pride and to seem like a victim of a greedy friend.
"Why couldn't you?" Her friend asked.
"Because on December 31st, she went missing."
After they left and after the hallway started to empty itself, I made my way to the parking lot where I expected to find my dad's car parked in one of the parking spots but didn't find him anywhere. I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and checked if he sent me a message about that. And he did.
