The cool, crisp air hit my face as I pushed my way out of the bar. I knew it was a bad idea to go out tonight. I had a gut feeling and I should have listened. Of course I couldn't turn down my friends who only wanted to celebrate me turning 25. I don't like to drink. The feeling of being drunk and not having full control of my actions. I just needed some fresh air. It would only be a matter of minutes before my friends noticed my absence.
I sigh and try to take in every second before they come ushering out of the bar looking for me. I pull out my phone and check the time. Just past midnight. Oh how I'm ready to go home and crawl into my bed.
I finally conjure enough energy to enter the bar again, but as I turn I bump into something hard. Not something, someone. I look up to a tall, dark figure. His black hair slicked back, and his green eyes shimmering in the moonlight. He's very handsome.
"O-oh. I'm so sorry." My speech slurred.
He didn't say anything for a moment. Just looked down at me smugly. "Right." He says simply and walks away. I swear he said something under his breath, but I ignore it. I don't bother with pissy strangers.
As I approach the doorway my friends are making their way out.
"We got an Uber if you want to ride with us! We're going to the nightclub down the road. You should come!" My friend Ashley says. Her arm wraps around my neck and she drunkenly hangs on me.
"Actually I think I'll just get a ride home. I'm pretty tired." I was tired, but I really just wanted to go home.
"Come on, please?" Ashley pouts her bottom lip out.
"You guys go have fun. I promise I will go with you guys another time." I smile knowing I'm lying. This is not my scene. I would rather be at home snuggled on the couch.
Ashley pouts and glares but nods her head. "okay, but I'm holding you to that!" A grin finally plays across her face. She can never stay mad at me.
My friends enter their cab, and I wave as they drive off. I pull my phone out to get an Uber myself, but I decide to just walk and save some money. I don't live too far so I think it'll be fine.
The air is crisp; not too warm and not too cold. A few clouds float in the night sky as the stars twinkle behind them. It was beautiful out tonight. I'm about half a block from my building when I notice the sound of footsteps behind me. I turn slightly while continuing to walk and catch the glimpse of a figure making their way into an alley.
I shake my head and pick up the pace. "Damnit I should have just got an Uber", I say quietly to myself. I'm almost home, I'm almost home. I repeat in my head.
Just then I bump into something. Not something, someone. Again? I look up and see the man I already ran into earlier.
"I-i" I stutter not able to get any words out. I should have stayed home.
"Careful, girl. Not safe to be walking around alone at night," he says in a devilish tone.
I furrow my brows getting ready for the worst. I'm gonna die because I didn't want to go to the damn club with my friends. "I can handle myself," I state firmly.
He gazes passed me for a moment before making eye contact again. "You should hurry home," he simply states before walking away. I don't wait to question him and pick up my pace back home.
Before I walk into my building I turn back to see if he's still there. The man who had followed me was on the ground and the man in the dark suit was standing over him. "Okay weird." I say and make my way up to my apartment. I'm way too intoxicated to deal with that mess right now. That man seems like he can handle himself.
When I get into my apartment I immediately lock the door and make my way to my room. I don't bother to change or take my makeup off. I'm too sore and tired. I slip off my heels and flop into bed. It doesn't take long before sleep takes over me.
Before I drift to sleep the man in the dark suit flashes through my mind. He was pretty handsome.
