Avery POV
“Ethan, are you alright?” The doctor asks, looking at him.
“Uh, yeah, I’m fine, just tired is all,” He says quickly, looking at the floor.
“So, are you ready to get started?”
He nods, and begin telling a story. He closes his eyes so he doesn’t have to see us. I was silent.
“Well, I’ve been admitted to the psychiatric ward of the hospital for attempted suicide. This is the third time I’ve been admitted. The first time I was admitted for trying to hang myself, in over the summer, after freshman year. My mom came home from work early and saved me. After a year of therapy and constant watch, I was released from here. School had just let out, so I missed my entire sophomore year. Three months later, when I returned to school, everything started back up again. All the bullying, the constant family problems, everything. I couldn’t find anything to make me want to keep living the way I was. So, three months after returning to school, I tried again. I took pills, but my dad found me in the bathroom halfway through. I had my stomach pumped and then I spent six months here before I was released. I missed most of my junior year. When I finally went back to school in September for my senior year, I thought, ‘I found it. The one thing that might actually keep me alive. Someone who could change my life.’ I was in classes with this girl, and she seemed perfect. Until it hit me that I couldn’t have her. She was too beautiful, too perfect for me. I couldn’t even talk to her without getting dirty looks from her friends from across the room.”
I gasped lightly, my mind figuring everything out.
“I knew she would never want me. And, lets get this straight, I didn’t try and commit again because I was heartbroken that I couldn’t have her. It all fell into place just then. All the times my parents said nobody would want me, thats when it made sense. Nobody would. I was too fucked up. So I tried to drown myself. Someone saw me beofre I jumped and apparently got me out. I didn’t want to be here, nobody even wanted me here,” He finishes.
“Ethan, thats not true. What’s the girls name?” The doctor asks.
“Avery,” He says suddenly, and its not until his eyes pop open, staring at me, that I realize he just spoke my name.
The doctor shifts uncomfortably at the sudden change of the moon in the room.
“What?” I whisper, confused.
His eyes drop from mine, and he also moves awkwardly in his chair.
“I’m sorry,” he says, his eyes never leaving the floor.
“This is m- my fault?” I ask, my voice waivering.
“No, no, fuck no, don’t think that, thats not what I meant by that,” He says quickly, his eyes finally joining with mine again.
“I’ll give you guys a minute to talk things out. After you’re done, you can go, you’re session is excused for today, but please come back tomorrow, same time, alright?” Dr. Rinaldi asks, and Ethan nods, and she leaves, shutting the door behind her.
“I didn’t mean to bring you in here and tell you that,” Ethan says after a minute.
I watch him look down, his dark hair falling in his bright blue eyes. His fumbles with his fingers, trying to find something to do. Unfortunately, we fall into doing the same habit, and soon enough, I’m tugging at my sleeves and shifting awkwardly every few seconds.
“So, what?” I say after another few moments of silence.
“Look, I like you Avery, a lot,” He says.
“I like you too, Ethan,” I whisper.
“No, I mean I really, really like you,” He says, barely audible.
“Ethan, I don’t think you get it. I really like you too,” I say, looking at him.
His light eyes look up from behind his shaggy hair, and a small smile brushes across his lips, just barely noticeable.
“So, is it alright to ask if I can take you on a date once we get out of here?” He asks sheepishly.
"Maybe," I tease, and I jump up from the chair I was in. He opens the door and holds it open for me, and I slid under his arms and run out, Ethan chasing me, and we head back to the room.
“How long until your mom gets here again?” He asks, looking at the clock, panting, as I fall into bed.
As if on cue, a nurse walks in and informs me my mom is here. I turn back to Ethan.
“Apparently now, she’s early,” I say, and I turn to leave, before Ethan grabs my wrist and turns me back to look at him. I smile slightly, and then there’s a quick flash, before I realize Ethan has snapped a picture of me with a camera that came out of nowhere.
“What was that for?!” I ask, yelling slighty.
“I’ll tell you when you get back. Go, I don’t want your mom getting mad at you. See you in a little while,” He says, and climbs into his bed. I meet a nurse outside the door, and before I leave, I turn and look at Ethan.
He beams and calls out, “Bye Avery!”
I laugh. “Bye Ethan!”
And just like that, I practically had Ethan.
He liked me, and I liked him. It was that simple.
Kind of.
Avery on the side! Sorry it got stretched out xD
