Third pov

Phoenix knows three things for sure.

1: Her kids need her, because they have no way of knowing if Carter is even alive. She cannot count on him to help.

2: Apparently, Dom is in the same boat as her.

3: She hates Cipher with a passion.

"I want to see my kids."

Cipher studies her for a couple seconds before nodding. The blonde led her through the plane, the guy with the red beard following.

There is something about seeing your kids, so close but there's no way for you to get to them. Hold them close....

"I'm looking after them." The blonde woman told her.

Phoenix hoped she could convey her gratitude with her eyes. She did not want to give Cipher any more satisfaction out of this.

Still, she looks Cipher dead in the eyes when she turns to leave. "I'm going to kill you. Maybe not today, or tomorrow. But I will kill you."

It's obvious Cipher doesn't belive her.

"Daughter to a powerful family, turned disowned street racer, turned wife of the king of one of the world's largest drug cartels. Quite impressive."

Phoenix snorts. "Well, we can't all be hackers and kidnappers. I don't really have the talent for it."

The blonde chuckles. "No, I suppose not. I don't have your talent for cars, after all."

"So what, I'm here because you need a mechanic?"

Cipher seems to find that very funny. "No, not because I need a mechanic. I need your... Conviction, your uncompromising stance on life. That's the one thing you don't share with the rest of your little ragtag group. Even Dom is willing to bend on certain points."

Phoenix tilts her head. "And just what does that mean?"

"You live on your own terms. You don't bend, or break under expectations. When you have something you want, that you want to protect? There's nothing you won't do to protect that."

The redhead laughs. "If that's the case, do you really think I'll let you walk away after what you did to Carter, after you kidnapped my kids? You think I haven't met people like you before?"

Phoenix is angry now, but she pushes it away, puts it in a mental box. Instead of doing what she wants and decking Cipher, she tilts her head again, a small, bloodthirsty smile on her face. "Do you know the problem with pushing a car further than you're supposed to? Sooner or later the engine breaks, and usually the engine takes you out with it."

Phoenix watched the other occupants of the room.

Dom and Cipher had left.

And left the redhaired guy guarding her.

"Got a deck of cards?"

He raised an eyebrow and she rolled her eyes.

"You've been standing there, watching me for an hour now. If you got a deck of cards we can at least play a game."

A second passed, another one. Three, four...

"Fine."

Playing cards with the guy was infinitely more fun that having him stare at her.

Carter woke to his mother's less than happy face.

"You certainly get into more shit now than when you were a child. I'm not entierly sure how you do it if I'm being honest." She motioned for the doctor on the other side of the bed to leave the room. Once they were alone she continued. "I'm calling up contacts and pulling in favours to see what we're dealing with. What I know for a fact right now is that Phoenix bodyguards contacted me to get you medical attention, Phoenix herself is off the grid with the person that kidnapped your children."

The bandage and stitches pulled on his skin as he slowly sat up. His mother just shook her head.

"I need to find out how they got in."

"Damn right you do. I taught you better security than that. Which means that either you fucked the security up or these people are better than expected."

Carter felt a headache forming despite the painkillers he was obviously on. "Contact Tej Parker. He might be able to help."

"Not O'Connor?"

He shook his head. "He retired with his kids and girlfriend, I doubt he knows anything."

A timid knock on the door interupted them. "Miss Verone? I need to check on Mr Verones shoulder."

Mariah gritted her teeth, but nodded. "Alright. I'll contact Parker, after that we're getting to the bottom of this."

She left him and the doctor alone.

"You have one gun shot wound that went straight through your left shoulder and then you have two scrapes, one on your thigh where the bullet barely missed and another one on your neck. Quite frankly, you've been lucky."

Lucky, huh......
