In our world we have choices to make, ones that define us or break us entirely. In a world ruled by figures who will micro chip you and track you to make sure you live the life planned for you, there are those who live beneath those choices. The chained, the broken, the pinned down masses that is what we are as a world now.
I am Roslin Butler one of those who refuses to let my life be decided for me. Ever since the world went to war with its self over some girl's DNA the world has not yet healed itself. Each country got put under a new leader, one for each nation, some choosing to keep their presidents and others adopting an emperor or king. Then each one agreed to track their citizens in hope that one girl's DNA recurs once more. Silly wishing; who would ever believe in that anymore?
Oh yeah....the Boss. I popped my head over the wall I hid behind, sighing as no one spotted me. The one who stuck me undercover to spy on the congressman's daughter in hope I could warn her that she would be picked this year for the Judgement. A stupid reaping of the world's pool to hunt down this "perfect" DNA. Like this fake smile would ever be her. Still I did have a job to do.
In my full bodied suit I jumped over the wall through the night to press my back to the wall to the back of the house. My earpiece buzzed and I touched it answering quietly. "Not a good time to pick to chat Bug."
"Are you in position?" The boy on the other end yawned.
"Yes....wait where's Bug? He should be handling this line." I snapped knowing the kid was just doing what he was told, just like I was. "My handler has to be on the line in order for me to do my job."
"You know that isn't my authorization to answer you Shadow. Just do your job and I'll do mine." The boy yawned once more and hit a key on his computer pulling up a command to send to everyone on the job. "Are you ready for the distraction?"
I sighed touching the piece. "As ready as I'll ever be. Send in the suits."
I ignored the lighted windows crawling up the wall, thanks to some spy toys from my Boss, and waited outside the barred window to the girl's room. I counted my breath away listening as the "suits" pretending to be some government section knocked at the door and opened my opportunity. Furiously I drove through the top bars a laser stick, going around and dropped it in the bushes below silently so I could unlock the window and take out the screen and cat-like jumped into the room. The girl jumped seeing me almost drawing the attention of her guards until I put a finger to my covered mouth.
"I'm here to help you, Carla. Can we talk?" I pulled away from the door back toward the window.
Carla nodded. "What is it?"
"You're going to be picked for the Judgement, Carla. That's why you're locked up here out of the blue....I came to warn you." I whispered listening to the creaking of the wood as the guards shifted their weight.
Carla's face dropped to pale white as the meaning of that hit. Death could happen, she'd have to drop her friends, her life, she'd be forever altered.....then the enviable decision. "Can I leave with you?"
My fingers pressed on the piece and the boy didn't hesitate. "The Boss has already made sure it's not her. Tell her she'll be free tomorrow morning to resume her life."
I prepared to jump from the window. "Rejoice, Carla, you'll be free to live your life. Your father has just gotten the news that you and your family is clear."
Then I flipped out the window, running through the suburbs to meet the black vehicle waiting for me and exhausted flipped off my hood. Annoyed I let my eyes hit the driver's in the rear view, "What are you waiting for? We have more girls to clear and warn before the morning light comes."
